read this posting, it should clear things up. http://www.mitsubishi-forums.com/t14077-mivec-vs-vtec.htmSynopsis: Vtec (Honda/Acura), Mivec (Mitsubishi), Ecotech (GM), VVTi (Toyota) are all the same thing. They basically have two different cam profiles (one for the low RPM range, and the other for the high RPM range). Long story short: None of the above create horsepower, they simply create a more ideal cam profile for the two rpm ranges.

QUOTE(EMC 3000gt @ Oct 21 2006, 12:44 AM) Ok I just read that forum and it doesn't answer your question. Vtec works like this you step on the throttle you go through the low rpms in search for your 2 goals Vtec and redline. As your rpm's climb so does your oil pressure. vtec cars have a vtec computer that in short reads oil pressure when it hits a certain pressure the computer is like OMG SWITCH!!! and somthing does somthing a solinoid here and there and all of a sudden the cam angle is adjusted to a more agressive angle giving you a boost in performance... and horrbible fuel economy. The idea was to give cars great MPG and a normal idle and high performance at high RPM's... the integra gsr is a 1.8L motor and makes 170 hp and 130 LB/FT Torque at i think 7000 rpms... redline is 8000 the type r make 190-200 and revs to 8500ish SO in the end vtec is a great idea for the everyday driver who needs the car to get great mpg and on occasion has a heavy foot. the new iVtec system works similar however it is more complex because it will also engage at WOT. Enjoy hope this helps... I'm 99% sure that is all correct... also aftermarket Vtec controllers do not work as well as the make them sound. not worth buying for the normal car.actually not worth it all if your that serious about performance then change the cams all together... Trust me your friend will eventually start talking about them. Ciao You are KINDA right... VTEC, on older Hondas, can be either SOHC or DOHC depending on engine code. SOHC engines have 4 valves per cylinder, as the DOHC does, but there is a locking mechanism between the two valves on the intake side only. When the oil pressure solenoid senses a certain oil pressure, on the SOHC it locks the two intake valves together, advances ignition timing slightly, and that is why you hear a rapid tapping under the valve cover. The DOHC works similar, but has VTEC on both the intake and exhaust valves. iVTEC is computer controlled AND pressure controlled. The computer changes ignition timing based on engine load.
