Hello,

New to the forum and I have a repair question. I own a 2002 Galant ES. Yesterday the battery puttered out on me, so I took it to a parts place and had a new one put in. After being replaced, the clamp to the positive terminal is broken. The clamp is still on pretty good, but it can't be tightened.

My question is this: how in the world do I replace the clamp? It's got a fuse and a piece of black plastic covering the connection to the terminal. I asked the guy at the parts place if they had the part. They didn't.

Do I have to get the part from a dealership?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. If none of what I said makes sense, I have a pic I can post.

Thanks in advance.

Well hopefully by now you've fixed the problem. My advise would be to take it to the dealership. It's a pain in the a#* to change it yourself. If you do decide to do it yourself, write down the order thatnyou take each part off.

You can cut it off and replace it with an aftermarket one. The dealer will sell you a battery cable and its expensive. There should be a nut holding the cable part with the fuse to the terminal you can attach it to one of the bolts on the aftermarket terminal.

hey mittech,

hi to you, i have the same problem with my 2003 galant positive battery terminal.
you said i could cut it off and replace with a aftermarket one. Are you talking about a standard battery terminal? and you also said to conect the nut to the aftermarket terminal. I think you mean a bolt i have a bolt on mine, but it is extremely hard to get off, and i'm assuming you mean leave the old (orig.) terminal on and connect to the aftermarket one. Does that bolt really com off or is it welded or something? i would appreciate any help ...thanks

I have a 2002 Galant and I am also having a problem with the positive battery terminal. The terminal is so loose that it doesn't always make a good connection so the car doesn't always start. I have tried to tighten the nut/bolt but they won't budge. The guys at the parts store don't have a clue and neither do I. Any ideas?

The fix, for me, was a whole lot easier than expected. All that is needed is a new terminal. The marine cover can simply be unbolted from the broken terminal and reattached to the new one. It took about 15 minutes to fix. All you need is a pair of vice grips and a socket. I didn't have the vice grips and was afraid that I would mangle the old terminal so badly that I wouldn't be able to get the car somewhere, so I took it to a mechanic up the street who fixed it for $8.

I purchased a marine terminal to replace the positive terminal and it has been working great. The black box and cable rings fit the stud on the terminal post fine. The only thing was that I had to replace the wing nut with a regular nut so that it would fit properly and tighten down.
