Too many people on the forum, say there car wont start but it cranks and tries to start.
And too many people check a few things, give up, and take it to the dealer when they could save a lot of money.CHECK THE CHEAP STUFF FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So im gonna help out and all the moderators im sure will add things ive missed but here goes.

#1 If you turn the key and nothing happens,Check the battery. This is simple just use an ohmnmeter to test the voltage. Not the battery then check the alternator and all starting circuit wires. Also check to see if the battery wires are corroded.

If your car cranks over but just doesnt fire up....

First see if there is spark.Just pull a plug,And have someone try to start it. (Need help just ask)
Second check to see if there's fuel at the fuel rail. There will be a test port that you can push and fuel should shoot out.

If fuel does shoot out, then have someone stand by the gas tank while you turn the car on to acc. They should hear the pump prime.

(DONT HEAR THE PUMP PRIME) CHECK the Fuel pump relay. Its a cheap part to buy or you can probe it.You will need a manuel though to see how and what the specs should be.Use a multimeter for that.

If you bleed the fuel at the rail. turn the key to acc and also hear the fuel pump prime..
you could have a fuel pump on its way out(aka its not working all the time),
clogged fuel filter,or a hose leak see if there is a puddle or some leaking underneath.

BUT if fuel is at the fuel rail and you have spark, your injectors may be clogged.
You can also backprobe your injectors to see if they are getting a pulse.

If you work and work and nothing checks out....

THEN TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC AND SPEND THE BIG BUCKS TO SEE WHAT THE HELL IS UP.

REMEMBER ALWAYS DO EASY THINGS TO HARD THINGS,too many times has the problem been a $5 fix and you gave up,took it to a mechanic and spent $500.

:amen: Very good post man.

May I also add check the + wire that connects to your starter. Mine correded off and it took me forever to find out what the deal was and having to push my car to get it to start to realize that something was up with my starter. The + terminal to that connects directly on the starter had correded off and it turned out to be a $1.29 fix to just purchase a new connector to put back on it. Instead of buying a new starter all together.

For a long time i had problems starting up my 1g in the winter. I had a short ram intake on it and it wouldn't start.

Quick solution, Starter Fluid. It's ether in a spray can... hell, you can even get high off of it if you want.

kudos kyle

and also, a quick way to figure out which route to check first (fuel or spark), you can use starter fluid. get a can of starter fluid (the spray kind) and spray it into the throttle body while trying to crank it. if the car turns over while spraying starter fluid, its probably the fuel system. if it still wont crank, its probably ignition related.

New update that i forgot.

If all the sudden the car quits working and there is no spark it can also be the Fuel pump relay.

Im putting this on here because too many people are dissagreeing and telling me im wrong.

I learned this first hand and know im right.

If the fuel pump relay goes bad,It will probaly start cutting out every once and awhile. So the car may start some days and not on others(this is what happened to me)Also it can just go bad and the car will not start.

When you check for spark there will be no spark. This is because the relay sends a signal to the ecu. When bad,no signal is sent causing there to be no spark. But this is a good thing, its a safety for your car.

If the car was allowed to start and the relay is bad then the fuel pump will NOT work.
When the car sparks on no fuel......BOOOM goes the motor. The relay is very cheap and usually lasts about 8 to 10 years.

its not the fuel pump relay. its the asd (mfi) relay. when it goes bad or say doesnt get a signal from the crank sensor, it shuts the fuel pump, coil, and injectors down. causes too many headaches.

thats why we replaced your cam and crank sensors. we never did jump the asd to test everything because it was like a hidden thing i didnt know about back then. but hey you got new updated sensors, makes you feel good right? lmao

i've had that one happen. every once and a while when I would try to start the car I wouldn't hear the fuel pump kick in when i turned the key. it would die on me sometimes just while cruising along too.

the only thing I had to go on was the lack of sound from the pump when I turned the key. so when it happened again I turned the key off and on until I heard the pump kick in and it fired right up. I replaced the relay for $3.56 and it never happened again.

the guy at the dodge dealer (since the engine is chrysler) said they sell those relays more than 8 times a month for the neons, talons, avengers, and sebrings all with the 420a, a588 engine. not worth checking for a recal since the part was under $5.

what sound does the fuel pump relay make if its trying to pump?(if there is even a sound it makes) or send fuel thru out the car? because i jus started mine after a few months without a battery, and the only sound i heard was from the new starter that was put in.

you wont hear a sound from the relay, youll hear it from the fuel pump. im not sure about 1G eclipses, but on a 2G, you can usually hear the fuel pump make a whirring noise for a second when you first turn the key to ACC (the furthest spot you can turn it to before it tries to crank the car)
