is the engine making any noises when it cranks? what made the car jump in RPM, did you miss a shift or did the clutch just totally let go?

hey you guys i think i figured out the problem on my car, ok it says in the repair manual as IAN_12 stated, the fuel pump relay or mfi relay when it goes bad or the CRANK SENSOR goes bad it shuts off the coil, injectors and fuel pump down. Alright well im about to change the crank sensor and the MFI relay and it if works ill let you know, i read somewere that the mfi and the crank sensor's are usual causes of the "crank but wont start"

Not too long ago I came to this forum for the very same problem.

I checked spark plugs, fuel pump.. everything before getting a headache.

Turned out to be crank position sensor and tone wheel. I had the belt replaced too just because WHO knows when that was last replaced.

NOT A CHEAP fix. but then again, usually NOTHING on a gsx is cheap these days.

REMEMBER TO ALWAYS REPLACE YOUR TIMING BELT EVERY 60k!!!!

I just stumbbled across these posts. Is it possible these could be my starting issues with my '92 Montero too (6G72). Tomorrow I'm replacing the Fuel Pressure Regulator and fuel filter. Am I wasting my time?

Well, I replaced the fuel regulator and fuel filter and it ran good yesterday. This morning crank crank, nothing. So I'm on to the fuel pump relay and likely the fuel pump. I see you guys have found relays for under $10 for your Eclipses.

Any idea where I might find a cheap relay for my 92 Montero. I called the dealer this morning and he could not price it for me because the Mitsubishi parts guy was off.

Also any recommendation on whether to go Chilton or Haynes?

Thanks
Joe

First see if there is spark.Just pull a plug,And have someone try to start it. (Need help just ask)
Second check to see if there's fuel at the fuel rail. There will be a test port that you can push and fuel should shoot out.

where is this test port? and what plug can i pull? i have a 96 gst. a pic would help as i am a visual learner. thanx

change the fuel relay..... its what all my problems were, if the ASD relay is bad then it shuts down the coil fuel rail and fuel pump and you get nothing..... its a 6 dollar part, take your old one in with you so they can match it......it takes maybe 30 seconds to change

I know I'm in the Eclipse forum but I really want to locate and change the fuel pump relay on my 92 Montero. I ordered a Haynes manual on Amazon, but the faster I get back on the road the happier my wife will be. Any thoughts of where to start looking or pictures of what I should be looking for would be much appreciated.

Just a quick thought on the fuel pump issues a few of you have had...I have I 98 dohc neon (also a 420a just backwards) and I have tinckered on that thing for a few years and never had any problems with it running...about a 3 months ago I let a friend use it for a run to the store and it died, when I got it home I checked it out and found the fuel pump was not running...the fuse was blown and kept blowing. I could not seem to find a short anywhere so I went on to replace the pump and relays ect I'm the kind of person I cant sleep if I cant figure something out with my car so I went back out at 2 am and tried having a friend crack it over with a new fuse...it blew and I went through the process 2-3 times, and the 4th time I looked in the back of the engine bay and down (where the manifold is on the neon) and I saw the spark when it shorted...turns out because I had moved things in the engine bay for intake/different VC ect the wiring harness had been burned through by the heat of the exhaust manifold and I just needed to rolocate my wiring...the point is if you change anything in your engine bay make sure you check to make sure your wiring is not somewhere that its going to get really hot and melt...it took 2 months of everyday driving for the wire to sit just right on the manifold, but thats why you should still check everything over even if its been awhile since you have made any changes...hope this helps someone out there :) Best of luck to you all,

Savage

As far as the montero....i dont know a lot about that mitsubishi, but for most cars the relay box should be under the hood next to the battery...its a black box that you will have to probably take the cover off. I think there is also a fuse box on the drivers side under the dash (above pedals) but dont quote me lol...good luck :)

P.S. If you post this in the correct forum for your vehicle someone will be able to give you a definite answer :)

someone else is having a similar problem, I think calin, and he has a thread on this in the 420a section. he's pretty much changed his entire fuel system and nothing seems to help just yet. I think the last time I saw the thread he was going to remove the IAC (idle air controller) from the throttle body and clean it. This may help your problem as well
