i had problem with my 1995 magna, intermittent no-start, and occasional stall-while-driving. motor cranking but no fire, then ten minutes later, or an hour later, starting up and running fine.
took it to mechanic, cost me a little but no fix. took it to mitsubishi dealer, cost me a little, no fix. took it to dealer again, no fix. another mechanic. back to mitsubishi dealer third time. bloke rang me up and said they would take it up the road to the autoelectrician who would erase all the stored data on the inbuilt computer, then next time problem was to happen, should be a new error message which would indicate the nature of the problem. nobody had told me before that there is a little computer which stores info on past errors.
a few days later, after car had stalled again, they took it back to the autoelectrician and run it through the diagnostic machine, changed a part (can't remember what it was, got it on the paperwork somewhere at home, mebbe the crank sensor - something to do with the distributor i think, rather than fuel) and bingo, zero problems in six months.
what they also found was that my alternator was pumping out an abnormally high voltage which they reckon could maybe have been the original cause of the damage or failure of the bad part.
cost of repair (alternator fix was covered by warranty) was i think about $180
total cost, including all five trips to mechanics and dealer, somewhere a litlle over $500.
funny that it took all that time before someone thought of the autoelectrician, which made it all so simple........
