Hey Everybody, I have a Mitsubishi 3000gt SL. The stock sound from the pipes just aren't cutting it. What i was wondering is, instead of getting Borla since that's the only exhaust they make for N/A, could you put flowmaster standard 40 series mufflers on? If so, i need to know what inch inlet and outlet would need to be on the mufflers. I was guessing maybe a 2.5". If anyone could get back to me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

the flowmaster 40 wont sound good.

get a dynomax ultraflow, i have heard those on many applications 4,6, and 8, and they sound excellent.

if you have your heart set on flowmaster you might want to do either the 40delta, or the 60 series.

borla is really expensive, but i know someone that has it one his old Grand Prix Turbo, and it sounds excellent

I got two flowmaster mufflers. I still havent put them on yet, but i got the 40 series race muffler with delta flow, 3in inlet and outlet. I havent seen any 3000gts with flowmasters.. I really think it will sound alright.. Try going online in youtube.com or video.google.com to try and find a 3000gt with flowmaster... But the BORLA exhaust sound really nice though. :auto:

Dude, you have an Eclipse, not a 3000gt, so be carefull with the advice you hand out, as it usually does not apply to the 3000gt. A flowmaster exhaust will sound like crap on your Eclipse GS, but they can sound really nice on a NA 3000gt.

Here is a link to a guy who put on a Flowmaster on his SL, and there is a sound clip at the end. I think it sounds good. He used a 50 series flowmaster with a single inlet, dual outlet muffler, and 3" pipe. Check it out: :57:

it wont sound american, trust me. Nothing sounds as good as american muscle.

It will be a very deep mellow tone in the low rpms. and then in the higher rpms, it will be a bit more mid-pitch and agressive.

Take it easy big guy, just because I am new to this forum, does not make me a "newb," and that add/subtract/multiply tirade made no sense at all. I have both a 1998 Eclipse as well as the 1998 3000gt, and I love em both, and work on both extensively. So I hope you or bobthecow don't think I'm hating on Eclipses.

The only thing I was pointing out to you was that not just in this discussion, but in others in the 3000gt forum, you offer advice that is sometimes way off base. I'm not trying to start an argument here with you, just saying you may want to be a little more carefull with the advice you give.

You said it yourself, your comment was "your opinion", and being only that, others may disagree with you.

Anyways, did anyone check out that link and hear the sound clip?

I've got a 4" borla resonator on mine, along with 2 3" magnaflow mufflers... not much restriction, and sounds decent. still has a bit of a drone at cruise RPM though.

I have also heard that borla has a bad drone with there exhaust at cruise RPM.

Yes, it looks like he only used one flowmaster. Are you going to be changing out your piping as well, or only the mufflers?

On the 50 series flowmaster muffler, can it be a 3" inlet and 2.5" outlet? Cause that is all i see on the site.
