Can anyone tell me the best oil to use in a 2.0 GDI engine to help quiten down the lash adjusters on cold start. It's very noisy around 2400rpm for a minute or so in the mornings.

According to the service manual, an oil change should fix it, but it is supposed to have been done already.

Any advice appreciated,

TIA

your advice is correct.an oil change is usually all that can be done to correct this other than replacing tappets which is expensive to do.best thing to try if you have not already, is to use a good quality engine flush next time you change your oil.some flushes can be left in for a short period of time and actually driven while it is present to assist in cleaning the lifters.the fault is the lifters can stick and in most cases doing the flush will cure the fault.if it does I would also recommend doing the flush every service as this is what we do on all vehicles when we service them and it results in much less problems.

Thanks, I will give it a try.

Would a thicker oil such as 20w50 help stop them? I have heard magnatex might help, anyone have any experience with it in a GDI engine?

no a thicker oil will not solve the problem,i used 10w30 and change every 3000 km with oil flushing agent and still get the noise from the tappets,so i am looking for a good oil flushing agent.

thicker oil actually tends to make the noise worse as it takes longeer to thin when warming up.the best solution is to keep using an engine flush every change and upgrade your oil to a high grade semi synthetic 10w40.at work we use shell helix but there are many different oils out there.some contain additives that are designed to keep the engine cleaner.perphaps a few of the performance gents on here could refer you to a good oil brand they find sucessful.many choices are available so don't be alarmed at the different responses.good luck
