Well this may seem like a no brainer to some but I thought it might help someone experiencing the same problem I've had. I've got a '94 expo lrv with a F4a23 in it. I had it rebuilt 60,000 miles ago and it started hunting through the gears. I checked the fluid first and thought it was full. I thought maybe the fluid and filter should be changed even though I was using mobil 1 synthetic. I had what I thought was an engine oil leak from the rear main, but it turned out to be trans fluid. When I dropped the drain plug I got less than a quart out of the trans. I also discovered that the shop removed and did not replace the five magnets in the bottom of the pan, I hope they didn't forget anything else. So after changing the filter and topping off with fresh fluid everything's fine. I'm just going to have to keep a closer eye on the level from now on. Hope this helps someone else. Cheers!
