Hi all. First post here.

I have a 1995 Verada that had a few probs when I first purchased it, mainly slipping around 80k's. I beleve that is now fixed.

However an ongoing problem, one I have just accepted and got used to is this:

"When car is cold, or not driven for a few hours, when first started and moving from idle to Reverse or Drive, the car jolts agressively. This is repeated before moving off.

The same thing occurs when the gears change, although before it jolts in drive it will over rev, then jolt into gear."

This takes place until the car is warm, normally around 15 minutes of driving.

I have just had the TP Sensor replaced, new sparks and cables, new battery.

If anyone has experienced this I would appreciate some feedback. The local Mechanic doesnt understand.

Change the oil in the box to the correct mitsubishi oil
and have the kickdown band adjustment done
Is this a v6 or 4?
if that doesnt fix it

may be a faulty transaxle controller or icu unit
it even may be the torque converter or oil pump

too many possibles

you need a diagnostic done at a specialist automatic workshop
what work was required to fix the slipping at 80 km ?
how many kms has this box covered ?

thanks

Too many possibilities!!!?? aarrggh..
thanks for the reply

Its a V6, I believe the belts were adjusted to correct the slipping
Its covered just over 250,000k's

I'm taking back to the mechanic this arvo, I will suggest doing a kickdown band adjustment.

What is your idle speed cold and when warm?

If its too high the thumping can occur.

Hey Rob,

When its cold the idle is 1800, whch the mechanic tells me is fine. I let it warm for about 4 minutes which drops to about 1400.

It was also thumping when it was cold yet idling at 1000

Correct idle speed when warm is nearer 700 rpm. I would think that is it.

Haven't checked mine cold for a while and with the weather here at the moment I won't be able for a while.

I would look at the idle speed servo or stepper motor before worrying about the transmission as the ISC is not that reliable.

I may not have a V6 TR/TS, but for any car I would say 1800 RPM at idle is way too high! At most about 1000 RPM would be acceptable although may still thump even at that point, and above that there may be too much load on the transmission, causing it to make rather violent jolts when changing gears. Since the idle will drop a little as it warms up, that will cause less jolting.

I would follow Rob_D's suggestion in checking the ISC before looking elsewhere, as if it is surging while changing gears, that could be part the cause. Also ensure the TPS is correctly adjusted, as that will also cause significant issues.

Thaks Rob_D an Dave.
I just got the car back from the mechanic. I left it there over night as everytime I took it there the car was already warm and not showing the same symptons. The jolting occurred when the car first starts, generally more violent when the car was cold.
The revving or surging was there for about 20 minutes until warm. The idle problem was ok until stopped at lights for longer then 15 seconds (rare I know ;) ). and then the idle would drop and rise quickly continuosly from 1000 to 500.

apparently all the mechanic had to do was give the injectors a good clean out (off car). at the moment EVERYTHING has been resolved.
Car is now - when cold- idling at 1100 the drops to 700 when warmer.
It didnt thump into gear the first time. it is slightly over revving but nothing near what is was like before. and the idling is now fixed.

Ill keep this topic posted as to any changes I notice though, but thanks for everyones assitance. See how this problem goes.

Apparelty Magna's are notorious for injector issues.. any thoughts?

Mind you, I lost my car keys for about 3 months recently and wasnt in Road side assist.. Car was sitting there with a tank of unleaded fuel. Maybe there was a build up of wax or something and clogged the injectors. Just didnt clog them enough to degregrate the overall performance.

When warm it ran not to bad. just the jolting and idle..

Well after all this time I still had the original issue, car was overreviing until warm (surging) at times. clunking into gears.

my convetor was stuffed and then caused my gear box to be useless, plenty of metal shavings from the busted convetor.. I beleive this was on the way out before I purchased the car. A new convertor and a second hand gear box, and the car is running perfectly. not one issue.

Appreciate everyones time and effort on this matter.

Hi folks,

Does anyone know a good Mitsubishi mechanic in the Illawarra region. i have just moved there and my verada has 300k on the clock and has a slight miss when accelerating. I have changed the distributor cap and rotor button. I have a spare parts tree (another car) which has nearly new injectors and a near new computer (ithink that's what it's called, its up under the dash) and I thought i should swap these over. Any advice would be appreciated.

Dramgi

the miss is a common fault in the verada
you may find it is the stepper motor idle controller near the throttle body

downloadable manual http://www.lisho.net/?page_id=3

mitsubishi australian models magna verada 4 cyl and V6

you need the second gen

if no luck finding a mechanic in illawara

Chain Rattle,

Can't thank you enough. Have learned more about my car in the last few days than I have in the last few years.
