Hello, I live in Vancouver BC and I have a Lancer 04, I've been putting premium in to it, and I would like to know if it is good or bad for it. Also I always hear this ticking noise from the engine and the Mitsubishi people say it is normal. If anyone is got any answers or suggestions pls reply!

Andrew

Yes, I've heard that you get better milage with Premium but I only get about 430-440 km / tank of gas, But I have never tried fueling it up with regular, so I don't have anything to compare it to? Has anyone tried to fuel up with both of those and could tell me. Also is there any way to make that noise a little less?

Thanx a lot

Premium isn't always better actually. Unless your car specifically states that's what it needs. If you use a premium gas in a car designed for regular sometimes it may cause the engine to become dirtier and slower-burning high-octane gas produces less power when it is used in an ordinary car. By using a higher octane gas, it will not make your car perfom better, drive faster, get better mileage or be cleaner. So, check your drivers manual, if it says regular, stick to it and save your money!

And no, your car should NOT be making that ticking noise. Often times what happens when you use the wrong grade gasoline. The noise occurs when the cylinder pressures are too high. Though it is normal for an engine to ping a little at full throttle pressure because the cylinder pressures are very high at this time. This "noise" can lead to some serious damage to your engine. But the noise may not be just from using the wrong gas, it could also be a problem with the cars ignition timing or the exhaust gas recirculation. But since your car is new, you can pretty much rule out carbon build up that can also increase cylinder pressures. Hope I helped out a little...

Ok, then my boyfriend who's a tech at GM is wrong too then and everything i've found on the web about it... I'm not trying to fight with you about it but i think your owners manual to your car won't lie. Car's usually shouldn't make ticking noises but whatever, not my car.

Does high octane gasoline increase power?
If your car is designed to run on 87 octane gasoline, you shouldn't notice any more power on high octane gasoline. Again, if it does make a noticeable difference, you may need a tune-up.

Is high octane gasoline more refined -- is it just a better product?
Additional refining steps are used to increase the octane; however, these additional steps do not make the gasoline any cleaner or better. They just yield a different blend of hydrocarbons that burn more slowly. The additional steps also increase the price.

Is all "premium" or "regular" gasoline the same?
The octane rating of gasoline marked "premium" or "regular" is not consistent across the country. One state may require a minimum octane rating of 92 for all premium gasoline, while another may allow 90 octane to be called premium

In fact, in most cases, using a higher octane gasoline than your owner’s manual recommends offers absolutely no benefit. It won’t make your car perform better, go faster, get better mileage or run cleaner. Your best bet: listen to your owner’s manual.

well we are suppose to listen to the owners manuel oh and i guess running 110 racing gas has no benefit either even though stillen motorsports which i worked for proved that higher octane does although very slight does increase fuel economy and burns better but then again what di know right

Hey guys, thanx a lot for the responces, I think i am going to try to put 87 in to my car next time i fill up or i might just call mitsubishi and ask them, because I don't want to wreck my cars engine. Although I think that a better gasoline should be better for the car.

Thanx a lot
Andrew

i have used 91 since day one as RMR and RRM both suggeseted because 87 is a little to lean for the 4g94 motors which is a little odd but oh well

Yeah, I have called mitsubishi and they have confirmed that ticking is normal and 94 is better then the 87 for the engine and the exhaust system. It also increases your milage /tank! So yeah I am quite happy, I juss sometimes don't like when I get my information from all the same source, because mitsubishi might just be saying that stuff to get rid of me. SO Yeah guys thanx for your help.
