Hi there, i am new to the forum :) In fact i am new to the cars world too, i ride a motorbike but recently decided to buy a car as well.

I bought this car 3 days ago and today i noticed that "Check Engine" lights is on and stays red all the time when i drive. I havent noticed that before. Last owner said that hey had some problems with the car but after replacing the battery it was working fine, not sure if the battery has anything to do with it but it could be a clue to you car gurus :) He also mentioned that the car uses quite a lot of coolant.

its 1993 Magna with 130.000 km on the clock.

Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks

Pawel

possible causes

check the oil .see when it was serviced last

replace the O2 sensor thats connected to the exhaust manifold with a ceramic and a wire running off it

the Throttle position sensor needs adjusting --near the throttle body

the air flow meter in the air filter cannister needs testing

pm wrexed-03 or rod -d they know more than I do

Ok, thank you for the advices, i disconnected the battery and left it for around 10 minutes, re-connected and the light dissapeared. We also checked the oil and it seems to be in good condition, checked air filter and water/coolant level and they also seem to be fine( my friend is a car mechanic). Im planning to change the oil and oil filer just in case. I do not have owners manual so i would have to relay on your advice again, how much and what type of oil should i use? The car has done 130.000 km. :)

I've used Shell Ultra in the blue bottle for years. 15w-50 but 15w 40 would be OK.

Mine is now up to 220,000 + Km and going well (Touch wood)

The workshop manual can be downloaded from:

Hey Folks, :)
Well I have only recently bought my first magna (1993 executive wagon) and I also had the issue with check engine.

However my issue I resolved (with a great friend's assistance) to be the ECU. I thought perhaps the Engine control relay was at fault however using a method from my Haynes manual, allowed me to establish that the ECU was actually at fault.

So a quick trip to the wrecker (luckily he was in a good mood) I got a replacement for $80.00 & went back and installed it in a matter of minutes. Voila! car running like a kitten. No continual Check Engine light, and operating smoothly.
