Hello, I am a new member and own a mitsubishi mirage x 1992. I have lost the manual and cant find it anywhere. Can anyone tell me if putting 98 octane fuel instead of 91 in it will have any affect? Will the car even run with it in it. The reason I ask this is because the engine sounds like its detonating a lot so am a bit concerned about that.
Thanks.

Higher octane won't hurt but probably won't help either. If the octane requirements of Mirages delivered to Oz are the same as to the US, then it should run fine on the lowest octane commonly available. Typically in the US the lowest rating is 87, followed by mid-grade at 91, followed by premium at 93 or 94. I don't know how octane ratings are done in Oz.
You might want to check the ignition timing. Advanced timing will give you a ping for sure. Could a previous owner have advanced the timing hoping to generate more power?

Hello,
Thankyou for your response. The octane ratings are the same in both yours and my country. I currently have it running on 91. I guess the pinging could be a timing issue for the sparkplugs because the engine runs on sometimes when I turn it off. It will keep running when I turn off the ignition so I might get that looked at. Would it be exspensive to get the timing altered?
Thanks.

The run on is troubling. Is the car overheating at all or are the temps higher than usual? It could also be caused by advanced timing. Has it done this since you've had the car or is this a new issue? Does the temp gauge rise significantly if you sit at idle?
Setting the timing is a simple procedure, about 15 minutes, so it should be inexpensive.

The car is not overheating at all. The temperature is normal at all times. I think that it is most likely just a timing issue. Yes this problem has been with the car since I took ownership of it. Thanks for your help.
