Hi new poster here,i own a 2004 carisma 1.9 d-id,125k on the clock, yup its my taxi, regular service etc runs smooth till recently.
It has a problem accelerating from low revs, very slow to pick up,it does accelerate smooth but just slowly,eg 40 mph in 4th gear, foot to floor it should shoot off, nope just a sluggish ride up to 60,it has been into mitsubishi 4 times, its under warranty.
1st 2 visits showed egr error, they reset it each time it lasted around 2 weeks then faulty again.3rd visit fitted a new air flow valve ran perfect for 3 days then fault there again,4th visit they had it 2 days and did nothing saying no fault found on diagnostic and test driver reckons its running fine,,yeah right.they wouldnt have it the fault was back. does this sound like a faulty egr valve, i had similar prob on my mondeo,is there a way to bypass the egr as a quick test or does anyone have any other ideas.cheers.

resetting the ECU is no way to 'fix' an EGR problem. Anyway, yes, you can bypass the EGR on most jap cars as its simply not needed in this country. How you do it on that particular engine i have no idea.. sorry. But, you sound like you know what you're on about so i'd follow that ruote if i were you...

I cant see why the EGR would make for sluggish acceleration though..

Yup thats what i thought, only one problem ,i dont know where the egr is on this engine,if anyone is able to point it out it would be greatly apreciated, similar bypass to the mondeo i would imagine, cut pipe block ends, well thats one of the easier methods.

Going off my mondeos egr fault, once it was bypassed it was either fully open/closed cant remember which giving it free flow of whatever gas it was regulating, when the mondeo was faulty it wasnt running efficiently due to this gas not being allowed into the chamber or to much being allowed, like i say cant remember which way it worked, chucked out smoke like a petrol engine with diesel in the tank, once bypassed it ran like a dream.

UPDATE
disconnected the egr valve, electronicaly controlled i noticed, controlled im guessing by the air intake sensor,no intake pipes on the egr only a cable plug, not a bit of difference to performance, although i believe there should be a bit of change i am surmising that the newly fitted air flow sensor mitsubishi fitted on its third visit may well be faulty, there was a smell of burning rubber for 3 days after it was fitted(put it down to newly fitted rubber components),although the car ran as if it was new, then on the fourth day it stalled, restarted it and it had lost its kick as well as the burning rubber smell.mitsubishi claim there is no fault codes showing up on there comp,i do know that an airflow sensor will not show a fault code unless it is totally kapoot,in other words it has a wide scope for error and will not show as faulty unless it is so bad it will not work within its large scope for error.
will update if i get any progress.
also i am taking my car for a rolling road performance test, this will give me a bhp readout as well as other stuff, gonna use this in my favour if it shows a bhp considerably lower than specified for my car.

Sounds like a problem I had around 130k, fuel sensor to the pump gave up, car idled fine but sluggish as hell up to 2000 revs and then it'd run normally in the higher revs. It's the only problem I've had in 200k.

Hope this helps

I think I've sussed it
after sitting there a while & checking everything with the manual & the multi metre & contemplating buying the extremely expensive mut II code reader.
I decided that the only thing to do with a computer is what you usually do when it all goes wrong, yes thats right, TURN IT OFF & ON AGAIN, amazingly (of course after checking that you don't have to reprogram the key or anything) it worked, I disconnected the battery left it half an hour and Bobs your mums brother, economy has returned & hopefully here to stay, with no more loss of power in the low rev range.
Give it a go, you got nothing to lose.
