According to the JPNZ Maunal for the 91-96 RVR, an automatic should only be towed with either 1) all 4 wheels on the ground or 2) front wheels on a dolly.
Is this right, surely with fronts on a dolly the center diff. is going to be wizzing round at a damaging rate? Have they translated it wrong?
If you have the book, it's on p. 138.

Have just noticed that on p. 117 of the handbook it says that you should NOT tow with front wheels on a dolly!!!
This makes more sense to me.

Common sense says that with an auto you need to disconnect the drivetrain to the axle on the ground you are towing. You can tow in nuetral from short distance but anything longer than a few km's should be avoided IMO.

thats if its 4wd and the front tyres arent on the ground but if you towing with a tow rope putting it in neutral wont harm the gearbox at all!! :laughing:

Just to clear up a few points if it is 2wd, you can flat tow (rope, pole etc) or suspend tow the front. If auto in N.

If it is a 4wd, you can flat tow in N, but no more than 30 miles at 20mph. If you suspend tow a 4wd it has a tendency to bugger up the transfer box or make it jump out of the paddles/dolly, unless the front wheels are free to rotate. If you have no choice but to suspend tow, de-prop it. :thumbsup:
