I recently bought an 06' UV blue GS auto/sportronic and I LOVE this car to death. I got it for commuting to work everyday. It has 21,000 miles on it. I am only getting 16 mpg and I'm a bit upset about that. What's the deal? I did get on it several times but haven't been beating the hell out of it or anything. Maybe it's that oxygenated fuel garbage they are still using? I looked at the air filter and it's a really restrictive paper element. So I'm going to change it to a K&N. Otherwise, everything seems fine with the car. Any suggestions?? comments? (thanks)

What type of gas do you put in it and from where? If you use Shell, BP, Amoco or something along those lines (the higher-priced stuff) you should be ok. Truth be told, Clark, Citgo, Wal-mart, and kinda -mart, buy their gas from what's leftover, and while it says "87 octane" you might be getting as low as 84. Fuel like this will clog your injectors. Second, if you are putting too high of a grade for your compression, you also will burn fuel too fast.

Thanks for the reply. I noticed that at about 70mph the car is running 2700/2800 rpm's in 4th gear (sportronic) which seems a bit high. (my Camaro's do about 2200 rpm's at 70mph).

If I leave it in drive or 3rd gear it's up at 3,000 rpm at 70mph. The gearing must be a MAJOR factor here. Looks like I'll need to drive slower :( . Also, I'll run some fuel injector cleaner through it (I did use a different brand of gas from some new place with a weird name "Worrocco" or something like that. And I'll get that restrictive stock air filter outta there for a K&N. The tires are pumped up to 33psi. Any other suggestions, let me know. Thanks!

Well, your RPM's will be different depending on manufacturer of the car. Second, It isn't about driving slower, it's about HOW you drive...do you punch it at the light, etc?

Hmm, not really. I try to drive normal without punching the gas. If I punch the gas, the tires spin.. so I try to avoid that. I'm going to try a different gas station this week too.

I'm beginning to wonder if something is wrong with the fuel consumption of the car though. I read somewhere that there was a recall for something to do with the fuel pump. Do you know anything about that?

There have been two recalls for the 06 Eclipse. Both were brake related and can be found on the NHTSA website http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems...ecallsearch.cfm

I've attached a copy of the recall summaries.

Thanks.. I appreciate it. Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I got 23mpg on the 2nd tank of gas. So I've now gone from 16mpg to 23mpg. The only thing I added was STP fuel injector cleaner.

This time around (after filling up) I put another bottle of fuel system treatment in. (Gunk). And added a K&N air filter to the box. Also, my alignment was off a little because I had new tires installed. So the alignment is corrected. I'll give you guys an update on how well it does on this tank of gas. :)

Ok, just went through the 3rd tank of gas a few days ago. This time I got 21.4 mpg. Which sucks. This was with a bottle of fuel injector cleaner again and a new K&N filter.

I filled up again and this time I put Sunoco Plus in (rather than regular). (can't remember the octane rating..maybe 89). Maybe this thing needs new plugs? (remember, I bought it with 20,000 miles on the clock).

Sounds like you have some issues. Pull the plugs out and check the gap and compare it to the specs. Also, check out the color on the plug, that helps a lot in determining if you have an issue.

Ok, I haven't gotten to look at the plugs yet. It's just beginning to get a bit warmer here in NJ (after getting 6 inches of snow). But I filled up again and got 24mpg on the last tank of gas. This was with Sunoco "plus". 91 octane. I'm pretty convinced that the gas I was getting was bad. But I will definately still check the plugs too. Btw, thanks for the help.

When I read over my owners manual, it says 91 octane only. I've never put anything lower in it. Did I miss read something, Is it not required to put 91 only in it? I know that my motorcycle says DO NOT RUN anything less than 91 and I haven't. Wouldn't want to screw anything up and **** happen while I'm riding it. Same goes for the G-Ride. But with these damn gas prices, something less than 91 would be nice. I had to get a new job because the commute was costing me to work. :57:

You said you bought the car used, right? Ever check your grounds in your car? One loose ground could cause your engine to think it needs more fuel.

Here in Oz my Ute (pickup) gets at least 50km more per tank if I use BP or Caltex fuel versus the cheap imported Singaporean shite. My mechanic advised me that the imported crap(CHEAPER/LOWER OCTANE) smells different and shortens engine life. Maybe the fuel substitution dilution racket has finally hit the States.Over here some gimps were watering down fuel with Toluene. Some still do. See if you can check it out.
Also remember lemons do exist. Experience tells Mits. has had plenty of yellow fruit over the years.Bestaluck

This is very true. Stick to name brands.

Shirl...i feel your pain. I bought a 2007 GS w/ sportronic last year and also notice crappy MPG...from 19-22. And i'm also from NJ, so i'm sure we're getting the same gas. I've been using regular (87 octane) from Valero.
