I have a 1995 3000GT SL and my dad and I are looking to either drop a turbocharger or supercharger in it. ive read the forums and people dont think too highly of superchargers over turbos i noticed. we have also already tried every junk yard within a 300 mile area of us and they have turned up only 1 VR-4 and the only part for it was a transmission with a broken case.
so what im asking is if anyone knows of a decent supercharger for a 3KGT, or if there is a turbo kit out there now that will fit a 3KGT SL. we already planned on a Greddy EMS for it if we go turbo.
thanks :)

I have yet to see a decent supercharger for these cars. The few I have seen are very complicated and have a lot of issues.... Turbo is the way to go, it has been done many times, just get a totalled VR4 and swap over the turbo parts. If you swap over the turbos/manifolds/oil and water feed and return lines/intercoolers and piping/ECU/downpipe/ and i'm sure I missed a few things, or you can just buy them all and they can be had for just over 1k and you can run wastegate pressure (6-8psi) on an N/A motor and probably be pretty close to the same speed as a VR4 (other than the launch)

actually, i found a Hahn racecraft tubrocharger for $690 today that will bolt right up with the 3000gt SL model, although i will have to do some moderate to pain in the butt modding to fit the rest of the hoeses and all on there. i would still like to keep this thread open in case anyone stumbles on it and can give me any more (or easier) information or when i get around to putting mine on i can post the instructions and pictures. :)

cheers!

You do realise it's NOT just as simple as bolting a turbo/super charger on and going fast right? Are you talking about bolting a SINGLE turbo on an N/A motor? Also, just because you have AEM, DOES NOT mean alot. What about internals? Drivetrain? Fuel upgrades? Front Mount Intercoolers or Side mounts? Do you have money to throw at this? If you have money and are looking for a project, then hell yeah, do it. If your looking for a simplified option, you should just buy a complete 6g72TT and drop it in. You will still have to look at fuel upgrades, and drivetrain upgrades (clutch, T-Case) but it may end up being cheaper. You need to work out how much money you want to throw at this, then work out whether it may even be better to sell this one and buy a VR4.

Decisions decisions....... ;)

I agree with GTO's post, but it would be really easy if you could find a VR4 that has been totalled and take out everything you need.... but if you check on 3si in the for sale section they have stuff to do a tt conversion for 1-2k with everything needed, but like GTO said, you need to do fuel and clutch too, I forgot that in my last post, but you would at least need tt injectors, but it's not as easy as just installing them, the N/A injectors are high impedence, and the tt injectors are low impedence, which means if you use tt injectors you would have to install a resistor box or resistors for each injector...

COMPLETELY ignore RK's advice. ;) Forget 3sx AND buying a Vette. Just work out EXACTLY what you want to do, how much money your willing to part with and whether it would be easy to just buy a VR4.

There are plenty of sites with very detailed information about going twin turbo on a N/A motor with stock compression (10:1) and running wastegate pressure, however if you wish to upgrade to twin turbo internals, it would be more worth it to just buy a tt motor with everything on it already, but chances are if you do, you will still have to buy/fab all the intercooler piping and oil and water feed and return lines along with the wiring for the ecu and injectors... if you use a resistor box/ resistors on each injector, you can use stock tt injectors, if you upgrade injectors, you would need some type of fuel controller such as an safc2 or the like

You can alway look on www.3si.org or you can ask here, someone might know, if you are just wanting to run wastegate pressure, you have to get 2 equal length vacuum lines and hook them up to a "T" fitting and then run them to the y-pipe nipple on the back of the y-pipe, it's not a good idea to hook them up to the plenum b/c wastegates arent designed to have vacuum applied, only boost

Hey, if you guys don't mind me butting in, the 3000GT SL has a REALLY weak stock differential...if you go anything more than 270HP you'll blow it out and risk losing the transmission....before you go and start boosting..invest in an LSD and save yourself an **** LOAD of problems later on. And one more thing.. while i'm at it..the push rods are the EXACT same rods as the VR4...but the piston is a 10:1 high compression piston...apposed to the vr4's 8:1...so when ur boosting..keep below 10PSI...i hope my advice helps whoever out. :)
