I disconnected the battery on my 98 Montero Sport to work on my stereo a few days before I went in for a Smog test...It failed only because a few of the sensors on the OBDII have not reset themselves. I discovered that "specific drive cycles" are required by Mitsubishi's from 97-01 to reset these sensors. Other brand imports are not as specific and only require a minimal drive cycle.
I found this TSB EXTREMELY helpful in knowing how to drive your car to make sure the sensors have reset properly before bringing it back in for a retest. Also, if you do your own OBD scans and reset your OBDII you'll need to go through this cycle as well. Here it is:
