Gidday,

I'm in the middle of changing the cam belt on my L300 Sportpac. The balance shaft belt snapped and caused the timing belt to jump a few teeth -- but there is no other damage as this is apparently a non-interference motor.

The motor is the 2 litre 4G63 SOHC (carbureted). Now I've figured out all the timing marks for all the pulleys except for the cam pulley. All the other pulleys have really obvious timing marks cast into the front cover so that is really easy. However, there is no obvious mark to align the cam pulley to.

By rotating the cam pulley and observing the distributor rotor I have estimated the approximate position the cam pulley should be set at. At that position, the timing mark on the pulley isjust past the 9 o'clock position and is in line with a small rib cast into the cylinder head just above the mating face of the front cam bearing housing. Would that be in fact the correct timing mark?

There seems to be heaps of info for the DOHC version of the 4G63 but absolutely nothing on the SOHC version.

Also, I am lead to believe that the crank front pulley retaining bolt should be replaced every time the pulley is removed (for changing cam belts). I presume this is a torque-to-yield design. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, I would like to find out torque wrench settings for these motors.

If anyone can help with the above I would be most grateful.

Cheers, Chris

Hello Fred,

Welcome to the club,

Can you explain the difference between the SOHC and DOHC engine, is it single or double camshaft ?

I found a repairmanual for the 4G63 engine with 1 and the one with 2 camshafts.
Maybe a problem... it's in German but maybe the pictures speak for themselves ?

Here is the link , the repairmanual is a large ( 100MB) RAR file and contains manuals for several engines, it's the file found under : Motoren

Hi Fred
Looking at the front of the engine you will find the cam "dot" at 9 o'clock. There should be a corrosponding dimple in plastic upper cover
Will upload picture in next response

The attached photo shows the presumed timing mark I am talking about. It is a rib adjacent to the white timing mark on the cam pulley. Can anybody confirm if that is indeed the correct mark to set the cam timing to?

Cheers, Chris
