I need to replace my input shaft bearing on my 85 l300 4x4 gearbox. once i pull the box out can i just unbolt the front bearing retainer and pull the shaft out or do i need to dismantle the box. Had it fully rebuit about 5 years ago but i tow a trailer every day and the strain is starting to take its toll.

Hi ya Green Turtle
Unfortunately you will need to dismantle the entire box to replace the Input shaft bearing. Its a good idea to replace all the bearings as if one is about to let go you can be sure the rest are soon to follow.

I thought that may be the case. Drained the oil tonight and found some glitter in the oil and on the sump plug,so looks like another rebuild. Maybe time to find another van that has a rebuilt engine and box as my engine is drinking upto 4 litres of oil per tank of petrol.
