G'day
I have a 89 Mitsubishi Triton ute. A couple of weeks ago the right hand blinker started flashing quicker than the left. Now none of the blinkers or hazard lights work at all. All other lights etc appear to be ok.

I was thinking it might be the flasher relay. Does this sound about right to you guys? If so, where abouts would it be located and is it an easy job to replace. Is there any troubleshooting I can do to confirm this, such as bypass the relay unit to see if the lights work? Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Pretty sure it will be your relay.Replace it, they are cheap enough.Always start at cheapest solution and work up if you are unsure. If this solves the prob clean as many of the contacts and earths as you can which go to your lights especially your indicators. Last word buy a decent flasher unit. If you are so skint you cannot afford this borrow a flasher unit and try b4 you buy.If it blows up you are up for 2 and have another problem somewhere. I doubt it though. The only other thing I would put this prob down to other than flasher unit is indicator switch.  Good luck amigo

check if you have a towbar fitted as the early replacement flashers for towbars on occassion had a bad connection where they plug in.buy a correct flasher for towbars if you have one as the original flasher is on occassion not heavy duty enough

Thanks for the replies. Bought a new flasher relay, but actually fixed the problem by giving the hazard flasher a technical tap :) Not getting my hopes up that this will be a permanent fix though. Not sure if the problem is the hazard flasher relay or the wiring behind the panel both relays mount to.

Cheers

... sigh ... sorry to bring this up again, the blinkers have stopped working again but the hazards are working ok. Had a quick look at a wiring diagram and it appears the turn signal flasher relay and the hazard flasher relay operate independently of each other, but you can trust me when I tell you I'm no expert.

Does anyone know if this is this case? If so, should I persevere with troubleshooting/replacing the turn signal flasher relay? If not, any other ideas what it might be, possibly the steering column lever switch?

Thanks again for your help.

I have never had to replace the indicator stalk yet on any of the l200 range but have changed many of the flashers.I would personally start there as it is so common a fault.they are available aftermarket but make sure they are the correct pin configuration as mitsi is wired different than most I believe.the fact that you tapped it and it works again tells me the contacts in the relay may have stuck and tapping has broke them loose again although for a short time only.

Looks like you were right, conanofcimmeria. After a few weeks of working intermittently the old flasher has given up.

I replaced it with a generic flasher unit, Bosch I think, which also didn't work. I'm still guessing the flasher unit is the problem, because when I plug the old one back in it makes an electrical buzzing sound, even though it doesn't work.

Are there particular brands of aftermarket flasher units that will work with the Triton? Or should I just fork out 4 times the price for the genuine part?

Thanks

Never mind. After an endless search on the net I found this :

Narva Flasher Guide

which gives you a reference for which unit to use for various Australian cars.
Hope this helps someone else out and hope you won't be hearing from me about this again :)

Ok guys, promise you'll keep your sense of humour.

Changed the flasher unit, no luck. I've figured out that after I turn the hazard lights on, the blinkers work again for a short time then the problem reoccurs. So I'm thinking the fault is with the hazard flasher relay.

Anyone know where this is located?

Cheers

in your main fuse box located in the drivers footwell(UK spec)you generally have to be on your knees to look up under the dash and it is just beside the kick panel(use a flashlight to see)on the UK spec L200 the flasher unit does both indicators and hazards.one source may be some of the local big rig shops(lorries/18 wheelers)other than that it is dealer as the pins are reversed compared to most cars
