I don't like to tell this story because i don't recommend trying it but:
I live in the mountains of PA. before I turbo'd the car or swapped the 5-speed I had it lowered and was ricing around. One nite I was going home from the mall. I decided, F it i'm going to see what this thing tops out at. I put my foot into the pedal and kept it there.
to understand the result you have to understand the road I was on. 4 lane highway, hardly any traffic EVER and 3 miles downhill, a bridge, and then 3 miles up the other side. 15% grade, it helped. I hit 147 and got scared because I was running t rated tires and still had 1000 rpm to go.
Now, who is going to believe that? So I called my buddy and picked him up to do it again and have a witness. We checked everything just to be safe, seatbelts, tires, tire pressure, fluids, suspension bolts, strut adjustment and even the windows. We drove back to the mall onramp and I repeated the process. halfway down the hill where I hit 147 I got frustrated. The car wouldn't go faster than 135. He was laughing at me and calling me a **** for bothering him the whole way back to his house. when we got there I walked around the front of the car to go inside and it was then I noticed,,,,,,the hood wasn't latched.
THAT is why I don't recommend it. you can check everything possible and forget one thing that could kill you. that hood could have flown open, shot into the windshield and you can guess the rest,,,,,,death at 135mph.
for some reason the 97-99 420 cars didn't have speed limiters. you can go as fast as the car will let you but top speed isn't as cool as 1/4 mile or roadcourse speed. Any car can go fast, not all of them can win races or put up good times.
Be safe
