does anyone know an easy way to get data of a hard drive that has died? does linking the computer with another via firewire, usb, etc... allow you to salvage any information? now that i think about it, what are the typical symptoms of a comp whos HD has failed?

yea, i kno this doesnt have nething to do with mitsubishi, but how different could modern car electronics and laptop electronics really be?

I actually studied computers for 3 years before I went into automotive.

Is it the computer that doesn't start, or does it start it just doesn't boot up?

If the hard drive is still intact, you can hook it up in another computer as a slave drive. This requires changing the jumper (the plastic piece on the back) to the slave position, plugging in a power plug, plugging in the slave cable, and booting up.

When you boot it, if it doesn't recognize it right away, you have to go into the BIOS and set the new drive up in there as a slave.

yea, the comp will start, but it gives a disk error of sorts. what i was wanting to do was use another laptop, link the two, and start up the fragged one in target mode to try and see what i could get off of it. i dunno if that would work tho if the HD is completely dead, which it may or may not be. ive done that several times with 2 comps that were workin tho, so i sorta kno what im doing, although, the 2 comps i was using were both Macs. is there a button combo or something u can hold down on startup to get a pc into target mode, or is that sorta how the bios works? and thx for the help.

Yeah, you can use the BIOS. I have linked two Windows computers together but both have to start up and run correctly. Try uninstalling the HD and putting it into the other PC like I described.
