I just purchased a 2004 AWD Endeavor. I have read most reports stating the fuel economy of 17/21 or there abouts. I also saw on NADAGUIDES.COM that it is 21/27 (which would be great). I am wondering what you all are getting. Mixed results would be great too.

At my first fill up, I reset the trip odometer to 0.
At my next fill, I put in 18.1 gallons.
The trip odometer read 204 miles- boo! (11.27 mpg)
One thing worth mentioning, is is cold as heck where I live, so
I have had the car idling for 20 minutes plus certain mornings warming up,
so I am sure my first test is not so scientific. I'll let you know what happens
with the next tank. I'm not warming it up so much this go round.

Mike if I remember you are south of me by an entire state so I have little sympathy on the cold.:) We are finally above zero today. We have been having highs of -10 so to be above zero is great.

While on the subject of extreme cold, here is a question for you-
My last vehicle had pretty good under-dash vent air flow, meaning that when you placed the heater fan selection to one that directed air at your feet, plently of air went that way. With my endeavor, when I select any of the "feet" settings, it seems like just a trickle of warm air is sent down there- the result: frozen feet! Even looking at the ducting down there makes it seem like the vehicle was not designed to keep feet warm- the air duct outlets in the foot areas are only a small diameter circle. Have you noticed anything similar?
By the way- today it not only made it above zero, but above freezing- so I was able to hit the carwash and enjoy the momentary "heatwave".

Mike I just bought it on Saturday but didn't notice that. I think I would have too as it was somthing like -15 when I was testing it so I would have been cold without it. I will try to remember to take a look at it sometime I have a habit of setting the adjustments on Def/foot and leave them there until summer when I change it to mid body and maybe feet.

Temp wise we had a 65 degree warm up for yesterday. It went from -27 for a low to +38 so I took the Endevor back to the car dealer to get my free car wash which we didn't dare do in -15 weather.

I edited the temps I guess we got to +38 not +28 so 65* :D

I've had my Endeavor for about three months. It's cold here in Chicago, but I'm only getting about 13 mpg with some highway driving. Maybe it will get better with warmer weather

Mike I paid attention to that last night and you are right there didn't seem to be alot of air coming out down there. Like I said it didn't bother me in the sub zero weather so I don't think it will be a big deal.

:) for economical driving try making use of the adaptive shift control feature. i.e. the first time u drive in the morning program it with a soft drive start up meaning. each shift should not exceed the tach meter reading to 2k rpm. also, when i do shiftronic driving i start on the 2nd gear if i am the only passenger.then shift to automatic once u get to 4th gear. i am averaging 20 mpg (40/60 city/hiway) lastly avoid lead -footed driving.

Ray I bought it from a non Mits dealer and have read that you can program but can't see how. The manual talks about it but it sounds like I need the other stereo/display to do it. The LS I have only has the time and radio station not the compass/temp. If I can still do it please let me know how as I have read of ways to check air pressure and the like but don't know how to access any. I also read it should have remote hatch access but can't find that either. I may go to the Mits dealer to become familiar with it.

 Your manual should be able to tell u how to go the interactive info center.u can literally change all kinds of parameters. compass/temp,exterior doors on/off , interior lites, the menu will walk u through. there is about 2 dozen different features(sub-menu) u can customize. if u do not have the manual buy one. it is very useful.

Ray I happen to be in the dealer this weekend (needed 2nd key) and asked. Since I don't have the compass feature I can't adjust the these things. Bummer

you all don't know what cold is!!!!! I think the heater is quite adequate(?) when I test drove it a week and a half ago it was down around -50F it didn't get hot in the cabin but it got warm enough.

I'm too stressed about bad gas mileage to think about cold weather today-
I performed another test, and here is what the numbers look like:
199.4 miles on 16.25 gallons of 89.5 octane fuel.
No morning "warm ups" to waste fuel. No lead foot. I actually drove like a grandma on purpose for this tank / test. A whopping 12.27 mpg. Boo!
I have an LS. No, I can't tap the mainframe. I just got this thing, and it has 10k miles on it. I think I may check the plugs, air cleaner, and tire pressures before I start watching the trip odometer again- because if I do, I have a feeling it will just piss me off! The window sticker mentions 17mpg with average city driving. I consciously tried to baby it along to get close- not even! Do I sound a bit sore? You bet. I still like it though, and I hope to get a better number on the next go round.

Well I just took a road trip and did a quick check and averaged about 16 on the highway going one way and 18 the other way (the second way had 89 octane). However Mits recommends Premium (91+ octane) and state others will work but will suffer in power and efficiency. Next trip I take I plan on checking with high octane to compare the difference maybe there will be enough to justify the higher price of fuel but I kinda doubt it.

Just so you all know the trip was 280 miles on the first tank (87 octane I believe) and the second was 300 miles (20 or so in town short trips, 89 octane). Both of these were with speeds at about 75-77mph for the majority of the trip. The second had cruise set where the first didn't (icy road potential).

:( Good advice about the shifting however…. I drive the car from Phoenix to Duarte, CA. It is freeway all the way with one stop in Quartzite for fuel. That is about a dozen shifts total. Drive 65/75 mph depending on posted limit, cruise control on, no AC and not at rush hour. I get a disappointing 17.5 mpg. Any suggestions??

You never stated which octane fuel you are running. I noticed a difference in milage from using 87 to 89 so I would expect a difference going to 91/93 octane too. Another idea is to increase the tire pressure slightly as this would reduce the drag caused by the tires. Don't overinflate them but a couple psi may increase the milage a mile or two per gallon. Also where are you getting the fuel? My guess is that the fuel in AZ would burn a bit more efficient than that in CA since CA has more pollution control agents in it but I may be off on that. The manual states some things about alternative fuels and the amount of sulfur and how it can effect performance. I didn't read that close as it wasn't an issue for me I was looking to see if I could burn an alternative fuel (E85 or any other which is readily available).
