Thanks Ray. I did talk to the service manager today and although he saw no benefit to using synthetic vs the cost, he said that there were no adverse effects to using it. BTW it didn't do anything to improve the mileage.

I just purchased my LS two weeks ago with 14k miles on it. I live in the north east and it has been somewhat cold (single digits) so I let my ride warm up for about five minutes. I have filled up twice since buying my vehicle and am averaging 12.35 mpg using 89 octane. No lead foot and no extended idling for warm up purposes. Hopefully I will see some type of increase considering gas prices up here ar well over the two dollar mark.

Well I just got back from another 270+ highway trip constant driving @75mph or so. I used 91 octane the way there (minimal back wind) and got 16.76 and the way back (can't recall octane 89 I think) and got 15.4 (had a bit of a head wind) so an average of the trip was about 16 and this is with only about 30 miles per tank being in town driving. I guess they may reach the 21 only if you are doing the same speed they did when the government checks which is something alot slower maybe 50/55.

QUOTE(mikkojay @ Jan 30 2005, 02:20 AM)
I'm too stressed about bad gas mileage to think about cold weather today-
I performed another test, and here is what the numbers look like:
199.4 miles on 16.25 gallons of 89.5 octane fuel.
No morning "warm ups" to waste fuel.  No lead foot.  I actually drove like a grandma on purpose for this tank / test.  A whopping 12.27 mpg.  Boo!
I have an LS.  No, I can't tap the mainframe.  I just got this thing, and it has 10k miles on it.  I think I may check the plugs, air cleaner, and tire pressures before I start watching the trip odometer again- because if I do, I have a feeling it will just piss me off!  The window sticker mentions 17mpg with average city driving.  I consciously tried to baby it along to get close- not even!  Do I sound a bit sore?  You bet.  I still like it though, and I hope to get a better number on the next go round.

Don't feel bad at all about your getting 17 mpg
on your Endeavor. With the adaptive shift control I program
it the first time i drive from off on "soft driving" i.e. it shifts gear before 2K rpm on the tach. Check your RPM(tachometer) when city driving it can go as low as 1200 rpm on 4th gear.
As consolation, my friend drives a Volvo XC90 with a 2.8 V6 engine
he gets 10 MPG for city drivng and 12-14 MPG at most. Not to mention the price of his SUV. I have driven 3 different SUV's before this baby with V6's I am quite happy with this one...overall...for the money I paid for it.

My '04 XLS AWD consistently gets 19 mpg with a mixture of city/highway running on 87 Octane. I tried 89 and 93, but noticed no performance or efficiency enhancements so went back to trusty 87. I have gotten above 20 on a highway trip, but I have also gotten 17.5 with mostly city driving.
