Been to check and a company here can turbocharge my 1.8GDI. But some people keep telling me not to. Whether its a valid reason, or they don't want me hammering the ar*e off their motors is another question, but the car has hit 100,000 miles now and im being told if i turbo it i'll end up blowing it up!?

Does anyone know if this is true? The engine has been very well looked after, and still drives spot on, without a single problem.

So anyone any ideas?

at that high a mileage would suggest such an upgrade could prove fatal as that tends to be about the time most people are getting rid of cars.If your serious about more performance I would suggest having the engine overhauled to get it back to peak condition again before the turbo.as well the gdi fuel injectors may not be able to supply enough fuel for your requirements.as these are five stage injectors they are expensive and only available via mitsubishi as far as I know.personally I would do alot more research on the feasabilities of beefing a gdi engine as they are prone to carbon build up on the later models.thats my 2 cents worth at least.good luck

I was under the impression it wasnt possible to retro convert direct injection engines to turbo.Have the company youve been too done something similar before,if its a reputable company what ever they say would prob be best. The engine condition is hard to measure,it may have been perfectly serviced all its life and may continue for another 100,000 easily but the added pressure of the turbo could be just too much. The non-gdi version of the same engine comes in turbo form in the lancer gsr's sold in some parts of asia.A transplant may be a better idea.

I second the transplant option, the 1.8GDI turbo is an amazing engine one of Mitsubishi's best IMO not that i've ever had the pleasure to work on one, but if you cant find an import you will have to do a lot to your engine to get it back up to peak performance.my 1.8GDI has now covered over 130000 miles and she's still going strong, but if you do start using forced induction you'll most probably put strain on any part of the engine that's week, could be a big end, or even the crank but most likely the head! also dont forget that a 'REAL' turbo conversion requires the compression ratio of the engine to be dropped as most engines run at about 10:1 where as turbocharged lumps such as the 4G63T lancer evo lump is only 8.5:1, our GDI 'rismas as a whopping 11.5:1 and on the face-lift ones 12:1. i'm not sure but i think the 4G93T is such a good engine because even with the lower compression ratios it's still go the compression of a regular normally aspirated lump, but without googlewacking it i don't know for sure.

Just be warned about 'bolt-on' turbo kits, they will give you very little performance boost as you wont be able to pull much more then 7 or 8 PSI where as a low compression engine can pull upwards of 30PSI boost. try looking into alternatives first, i recently helped a friend get 240BHP out of a 4G69 MIVEC lump, without turbo charging it or upgrading any internals or cams. all we did was induction and exhaust mods that took it from 168BHP up to 240, and the best thing about that is... no turbo lag.

i've already put a performance air filter and de-cat on my 'risma and use all performance fluids such as shell's V-power and a good fully synthetic 0W40 oil and you do really notice the difference.

ok, lecture over now, how this hasn't given you more questions than answers but eventually helps you make your mind up.
