Sorry this took so long Curt.

There is a way to increase your idle oil pressure but ONLY on the 4g63 engines. this mod will not work on the 420a cars since the oil filter housings are different. This mod can be done with the oil filter housing on the engine. make sure you have an oil drain pan handy though.

Step 1:

Locate the oil filter housing. Pictured is the housing for a 2g vehicle. The 1g housings are very similar and the mod will work the same.

Step 2:

Remove the bolt at the end farthest from where the oil filter attaches.

Be careful it is spring loaded and if you aren't ready for it you could lose the bolt, the seal, and the spring.

Step 3:

Remove the nut, seal, spring, and plunger. Inspect each part for damage. I am using a brand new 2g housing to show you the process, so your parts may need cleaned individually before reinstalling. If anything is damaged replace it.

Step 4:

Find a washer that will fit down inside the bolt and has a thickness of atleast 1/8". Drop the washer inside of the bolt.

Step 5:

Install the plunger and spring with a little bit of engine oil. Then, making sure the washer didn't fall out of the bolt, put the seal on the bolt and install tightening to around 14ftlbs. It isn't a bad idea to use teflon tape on the bolt threads when reinstalling but isn't necessary.

The idea behind this is that the spring and plunger assembly is a bleeding device inside the oil filter housing. When the oil gets to a certain pressure it will bleed off excess maintaining the oil pressure. By putting a washer in there we are "preloading" the spring so that it takes a higher pressure to trigger the bleed off.

yep, you found it. yes, you can do it while it's still on the car. just have an oil pan underneath

in your case though, you don't want to shim the spring. it seems like your car is having trouble with high oil pressure instead of the low oil pressure issue

so im pulling everything out to do what? Put it all back in? Im confused. All I gathered is, you do this to add in the washer to higher the compression, but if its not my case, why take it all out

so it's just leaking as it sits? did you check the drain plug on the oil pan for tightness/the gasket?

I just had another thought. if your oil pan gasket for some reason blew out a chunk and has a space between it and the block then the PCV system, would be going insane. drop your pan and reseal it with a paper gasket and red RTV

you should have used a black rtv for that. but that won't cause the leak on top of the cover. it would only leak down the sides of the head and inside of the spark plug holes

i didn't use any sealant when i replaced my valve cover gasket either and it leaked a bit, i took it off and used some black rtv just over the the half circle plug on the left side and made sure the rest of it was cleaned off, and that fixed the leak.
