Just like the topic say, how do you loosen the crank pulley on an ATX?

My brother-in-law and I have been trying everything we can think of on how to loosen it but the thing just keeps on spinning.. The only thing that we haven't done is using an impact wrench.. Is there any other way on how to loosen it? BTW, the car is a '98 mirage 1.6L...

Thanks in advance...

How are we gonna loosen it if we're gonna hold the pulley bolt? Let me rephrase my question.. How do we loosen the crank pulley bolt? We're gonna change the timing belt but the only thing that is holding us up is the crank pulley bolt.. Also when you tight it to spec torque, how will we do it without the thing spinning?

Thanks for the reply...

well there 4 small bolts holding the cranck pully to the shaft. The big bolt in the middle does not need to come off its the smaller ones around it that come off.like i said its like a 22 socket hold that and youll be able to loosen the bolts around it

Ok, here's the thing.. I looked at the crank pulley and there is no 4 small bolts.. all there is is the center bolt.. So how do we able to loosen it up? Thanks again..

are you sure your talking about a 98 1.6? and you sure its the crank pully which runs the alt belt and p/s belt? I got the book right infront of me it say that for 1.6, 2.0,2.4l it has those 4 bolts on the 1.5, 1.8, 3.0, 3.5 you have to remove the crank shaft centerbolt. if you provide me a pic i would be able to know whats what. you would you like me to post remival straight from the book both ways?

i think you would need a chain pipe wrench for that.

yeah the best i can say is a impact wrench or the eletrical ones if theres no posibility of either one then just a regular wrench and jerk it really fast one way then swith to loosen it really fast......wait its an auto or manuel? if you wanna put some extra work in.... rig something up so the flywheel/ flex plate doesnt moe then your good to go with a hand wrench....ie stick a flat head in the teeth of the flywheel/flex plate have someone hold and watch it then you loosen the bolt
