Hi someone has contacted me saying they are having trouble undoing the central nut in order to change the discs on a 1998 Wagon. They say it looks like approx 30mm. Do this sound about right. ie would it make sense to advise them to go to the tool shop and purchase a breaker bar and socket? or have they got the wrong idea of what they need to do.

I don't actually know the person, the message came through the local Freecycle group as a cry for help!

Mine is a '98 new shape and looking at the cd manual for that shape you shouldn't need to remove the drive shaft centre nut anyway, just need to take the wheel off and look at the disc. Some are held on by a locating peg (for the wheel) which needs to be undone first or maybe two countersunk screws through the hub mount, others don't even have this and are only held in place by crud and corrosion. I'd be surprised if you needed to remove the hub nut for the earlier shaped one too.
