Recently my wife rolled our 97 3.5 GDI Pajero and it looks like it may be a write off. While I'm a fan of the truck my family is outgrowing its limited internal space. I need a 4WD and seven seater and am considering a Delica or Spacewagon van. Can those in the know please tell me the pros and cons of the van and what is the most desirable year/model/engine to get please?

Thanks, Jim

Thanks for the replys.

What I'm really after is a larger 4wd vehicle that can handle the town and country with enough room for the kids and associated gear. I will take a Spacewagon for a drive this weekend but as there are different names for this overseas I'm intrested in your thoughts on other models, etc.

Hey, Jim. My family owns a Delica and the pros seem endless.... It's an extremely nice van full of features to fit the family. Ours is a '91 L300 Delica and I've heard that the Delica Spacegear is even nicer. Delicas (or Delis) are available with a whole range of options. On the older kind (the L300) Power sliding curtains, front moonroof and side glass panels, 2nd row swiveling captains chairs, automatic transmission, and more features are available. From what I've heard, the Spacegear is available with these features as well as rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights. Not all delicas will have all these features, however, finding one with many friendly features for the whole family will not be hard. Overall the Delica is a great van it has so many pros. I've only mentioned a few features, however there is much more to these things. For one they are very roomy, and for another, they are just very "nice" vehicles. Delica owners worldwide, my family included, are always big fans of these things... It's hard to explain, but the whole thing with a feature-packed, spacious, luxury off-road van that has somewhat a style to itself is pretty much awesome. So basically it's full of pros. For cons.......... umm, well, I have to think about that one for a while... They seem to have suspension that's a little on the stiff side, ummm.... they burn a little more gas than one might consider utopian, however it's not super excessive, it's definitely nothing like driving a Hummer, it's fuel efficiency isn't really bad, but I'm trying to give you a complete overview so I mentioned it as a small con, kind of like the stiff suspension, let's see... ... ah... well, our aircon has broken down a few times but each time it's been easy to repair and also we live in the Philippines so with the heat we use it full power all-year-round, not to mention the quality of work in this country is pretty bad sometimes, so I'm guessing that the aircon wouldn't be a problem in New Zealand. ... Oh, yeah, one more thing- the automatic transmission is a little sensitive- it changes gears too redilly so when we're on the highway, it'll gear down again right after we pass but the problem is we want to pass right away again (the traffic here prohibits us from keeping a very steady speed when we want to be passing everyone else) so we want to pass and the thing just geared down so it has to gear up right away again for the pass which makes it take just a wee bit longer to pass. Once again, though, this shouldn't be a problem if you drive at steady speed and aren't a really aggressive driver. So basically, overall, the pros are limitless, and the cons are very minor and few in number; so really, the Delica is wonderfull vehicle. Most prefer the newer Spacegear over the older L300, but I like the L300 better because, since it is a cab-over design, it uses space very efficiently and so, unless you were to get the Spacegear Long Wheel Base, the L300 is more roomy (I've seen both and the L300 has considerably more room for third row sitters and for luggage behind the third row.) I would guess that this might be a worthwhile consideration because you said you needed seating for seven. But obviously whatever Delica one were to get, it would be nice. Delicas come in seven- or eight-passenger versions as you probably already know, but, either one is amazing. So yeah, I would recommend the Delica as very advisable. On a scale of one to ten, it deffinitely scores no lower than twelve and a half.
