In my GTS, when I have the urge to have fun I switch to paddle mode, and it seems much more "choppy" so to speak than standard auto. Examples:

1) When I'm driving along at a constant speed, and let off the gas due to the traffic in front of me, sometimes (about 1/3 of the time) the car seems to "drag", as in it feels like the RPM drop considerably, but according to my gauge, the RPM is not affected.

2) When coming to a stop at a light, I like to downshift from lets say 5th to 4th to 3rd etc. Whenever I shift when the revs are above ~1.5K, the car seems to drag almost the same as above.

3) When hitting the gas to accelerate after slowing down similar to (1), the car seems to jerk or not be able to make the transition from decelerating to accelerating smoothly.

Has anyone had the same feelings in theirs? Also, do you guys recommend letting the car downshift instead of me doing it manually?

I've always driven manual transmissions. So I figured the GTS with the paddle shifters whould be the best of both worlds and got the CVT over a 5 speed. I stopped using the shifters because of reasons you mentioned. I found that you almost have to let the car downshift itself because no matter how low you let the tach go it still seems to jerk/drag strongly. (Probably because when you downshift a manual you can feather the clutch but in the simulated 6-speed it all or nothing)
I also have noticed this same "drag" feeling when slowing down in automatic mode. My wife's car also has a CVT transmission but doesn't do this.
Have you noticed this feeling sometimes also when driving in automatic mode?

I have gone over his posts and there is nothing wrong with them. Leave him alone, he is just stating that people asked his advice, and went against it anyways. It happens to all of us, and it can get frustrating.

agreed. im sure if you gave people advice and they went against you, youd probably feel real proud too when they realize you were right to begin with.

Well thank you guys for a quick response. I would prefer he would post something with meaning rather than "I was right and you were wrong.". However, I never said I was disappointed in my purchase, cars with CVT and paddle shifters are hard to come by under $20K. The car just seems to have minor kinks to work out.

Cody,

I am not trying to shoot you down or anyone else....

I just posted a thread saying that the cvt was not a good choice as it was very short in power, ect....

anyways. No hard feelings.

Wish I could help you but its a mitsu thing that I am sure they have to work the kinks out.

Have you have problems with your bitrates on mp3's? anything above 128 kbps won't play right...

1) When I'm driving along at a constant speed, and let off the gas due to the traffic in front of me, sometimes (about 1/3 of the time) the car seems to "drag", as in it feels like the RPM drop considerably, but according to my gauge, the RPM is not affected.

- I always race at the green light using my paddle shifter, and at 1 or 2 traffic lights I more or less hit the 60mph then a sudden stop for the stop light. And yeah I can feel the engine brake that resembles like drag...

2) When coming to a stop at a light, I like to downshift from lets say 5th to 4th to 3rd etc.  Whenever I shift when the revs are above ~1.5K, the car seems to drag almost the same as above.

- Same as No.1, the sportronic acts like reducing gears in real manual transmission, thus it's more of feeling of a drag...

3) When hitting the gas to accelerate after slowing down similar to (1), the car seems to jerk or not be able to make the transition from decelerating to accelerating smoothly.

- I've learned that flooring the accelerator while using the paddle shifter will not give me enough jump-start from halt, but as soon as the manual mode kicks-in the car ahead of me at start will be overtaken in few seconds. So, I tried to control the gas while watching the rpm, man sportstronic is the way if you want to feel the rush.

Has anyone had the same feelings in theirs?  Also, do you guys recommend letting the car downshift instead of me doing it manually?

- I just let the engine do it auto when it comes to reducing its gears, because I trust that it knows better than my intuition in terms of the timing of reducing speed at a given time and rpm .

and to those who feel bad about the CVT's power then you have the right to your opinion, but then we have the right to refute that too. I suggest, get a V6 or V8 engines if you want power. Basically, we settled for this little 4 banger engine because of economic reasons and looks. You can't expect a V6 power from a 4 banger, or getting a manual transmission feeling from an automatic transmission, plain and simple logic :57:

Sometimes, car issues can primarily attributed to driver's experience and attitude in driving and care of his/her ride. Few of my friends here has also some issues with their brand new cars. Some of them didn't really know the feeling in driving a manual transmission that's why they blow-up their engine, funny thing they blame it to engine failure due to factory defect or something and want to claim warranty!

So overall, CVT+ paddle shifter are toys for big boys, just know the rpm when to shift and you are good to go!

I feel those little quirks and sometimes I wonder if it has to do anything with the speed at which the CVT can change ratios, or maybe its all software related. If its software related, Im sure someone will take care of this in the aftermarket. Afterall I read that 85% of lancer owners use CVT trans.

The past couple of days Ive been sort of regretting getting a CVT when I feel like having fun or when the car feels sluggish here and there, but then I think back a the reason I got it. I got it for a comfortable ride, fuel economy and the option of changing my own gears when I feel like it. Just feels wierd with no clutch. I dont think its a bad sacrifice. I have a 240SX race car and a turbo Civic to fuel my manual needs. Makes my Lancer feel like luxury :)

Thing is sometimes the car feels fast sometimes slow (maybe due to the INVECS III adjusting?) and using the cvt on windy roads is sometimes more fun than a manual because of how fast it downshifts although you cant rev match.

My hope is that since the car has no throttle cable and ratios are software controlled that someone comes up with a piggy back that can work the rev match into the software and have more aggressive ratios. That would be awesome.

but when Im stuck in traffic, I LOVE the CVT

Ah so everyone is experiencing the same type of feeling. Makes me feel more at ease and I hope the engine and other major parts lasts the 80k-90k miles I'm going to need out of it before i graduate college in the next 4-5 years. I just get kinda nervous when I feel the engine 'drag' and 'jump' as in I'm doing something wrong but obviously not. I do however love using the paddle shifters and have found that as long as you shift BELOW 1.5K revs on the car (in any gear) the car will not 'drag'.

Camshaft25: No hard feelings. About the bitrate, I have no clue because i neglected to get the Nav and sun and sound packages when i purchased the car. I really want the Nav now, but I heard it'll cost 2K to put it in.

up in Canada the nav cost around 5K....ridiculous as we don't even get it as an option up here..

Once again we got the short end of the stick in Canada....yay

Glad I got the manual. If anyone gets a chance test drive the VW Golf GTI. If you're going to buy or bought a CVT you have to do some research first. VW has one of the best transmissions out there when in relation to paddle shifters. I don't think Mitsu spent enough time programming the software, not to say there won't be a fix for this later on. I just didn't feel like giving up control of that particular aspect of the car. It does make me feel good to know that other people think the CVT is sub-par also but there have to be some benefits to it. Remember, if Mitsu's C-class cars fail they're going to pull out of the North American market which equals bad news.

the "drag" is intentional; without the trans doing that you get no compression braking whatsoever.

keep in mind that the trans is not made by mitsu, and its quite doubtful the software is either. Its all made by Jatco.
Jatco is 80 percent owned by Nissan, and about 20 percent owned by mitsu.
they sell trannies to many, many automakers worldwide, and this CVT is in many nissan products, Suzuki products, and Chrysler/Jeep products.
