:460: Hi just a newbie can anyone help

I have a 1992 chariot the idleing started to play up so took it to the garage and they altered the idle and now it has a loud ticking noise coming from behind the dash, even when the key is turned but the vehicle's motor is not running, was told it was the stepper motor, car is running ok, cannot get a second hand stepper, cannot find who will recon it, and it appears garage is not keen to do anything but put a new one in, at a cost more than the car is worth, wreakers have offered $100 for it, car body is in very good condition including interior, anyone have any idea if it is a easy job to do and could I do it (replace the stepper motor)and if so how - any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

hi,

i would like to help but im not sure what you mean by stepper motor ( as this is a term for a motor/actuator that rotates in steps). They are commonly used to control idle airflow when the throttle body is closed. If thats what you mean then why is it making load clicking in the dash and not in the engine bay?

Also if it is for the idle it should not be to hard to swap.

:) Hi Bry940

Yes it does appear to be confusing the ticking noice seems to be coming from the dash left hand side top part of the dash can hear it clearly when the hood is raised if you turn the key so the ignition is on but the motor is not running the ticking noise starts should this be happening if it is related to the idleing, but the strange part is when the wreaker was taking a look at it he removed a wire when the motor was running and the ticking noise stopped but the engine was still running fine and he said it was the stepper motor i would have throught that if this was the case and it affects the idleing why was there no change in the running of the motor, took it to the garage now all of a sudden we have not only a stepper problem but a power steering leakage, and other items so cannot get a warrent and the repairs are going to cost far in excess of what the poor car is worth as none of them are willing to put in recondition parts so we are left with little choice but give it to the wreaker, we do truly live in a throw away society nothing but new what happen to the good old parts that we always took out and recon not anymore, the car's body and interior is in such good condition and the motor still purrs but it seems in this day and age it is not good enough. Thank you for your help.

Cheers Confused Kiwi

debliz,

It sounds like the motor has got stuck. dont give up yet, see if its blocked up for all the gunk that gets sent there from the crankcase breather. if that dosent work then hit it :) . You seem to have nothing to lose.

good luck

Bry
