Hi guys and gals.

I'm really hoping someone can help me with a problem that is both driving me nuts and embarrassing.

I have an 02 Galant ES 2.4L 4 cyl that squeals like a stuck pig especially when its cold outside (usually not too noticeable when it's warm out). When the car was under warrranty, I took it back to the stealer and they replaced all the belts. This seemed to help for a while, but it didnt take long for the squealing to start once again. I suspect it is a bad bearing in any one of the pulleys that the belts are turning. Anybody know of a way to pinpoint the pully/part that is causing the squealing? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

:liebe011:

Tired of being embarrassed by my squealing Galant . . . gman

I would say belts are you issue, but it could be something else so eliminate the easy to fix first :)

Questions on the squeaking; does it happen:

* when the car is turning
* when accelerating

You can buy a product called belt quite it’s a spray that will make the belts tacky and less likely to slip you don’t need much if this works then its a belt issue. If it’s a belt issue my next step would be to confirm the belt tension to do this you will need the specs for the correct tensioning and a torque wrench.

If it's something else an old school way to work out where a noise is coming from is to use a long metal rod with one end near you ear not in it :) and with the other end move it around the engine listening for the loudest noises this may help isolate the cause of the issue.

Mine does the same thing and I was quoted about $85 for complete belt replacement, but personally my gut tells me it's the idler pulley bearings. We'll se if it goes away with belt dressing or wd40 or both

I had the same squealing that started approximately one month after replacing my belts. The belt had stretched and had a little slack in them. I tightened them back up and the squealing went away.
