I changed the end-links on my front sway bar it helped but I was still getting that clunk-clunk noise whenever I would go over the slightess little bump so today I decided to change the front saddle bushings(OEM Part # MN100250) on the swaybar. Only one bolt (front driver side) was hard to get at because of a power streering hose that runs just above the head forcing me to use a box wrench instead of a ratchet. My Outlander now rides like a new one and it only cost me 20$ and one hour. Finally I can bring the radio volume control down a knotch......
Went for a long ride today it was so pleasant not hearing that klunk klunk. Believe me it is worth it.....

So what was the part number of the saddle bushings? In the pic you provided, is that the stock bushing? Congrats on getting rid of the clunk!

Sorry, OEM Part # MN100250. Since I could not find an aftermarket I went with OEM. Less than 20$ for both. The picture shows the new one after intallation. The old ones were worn and full of dirt and cracks.

Thanks! I'll remember this when/if I ever start to have that clunk clunk problem at every bump bump! I have an 06 but you never know when stuff is gonna start falling apart! Would you happen to be on cardomain.com?

Not on Cardomain but I do have pictures in My Garage of this site. My Outlander started making the noise very gradually at around 75000Km (40000 miles)

I have the same clunking in my 04 as well!Railway crossings sound the worst..i thought it had a broke strut or mount.Im going to take a close look at the bushings you replaced. Thanks very much for taking the time to post the photo Outy...really helps! Were did you get the bushings from?I dont have a lot of experience with suspension repairs. Is there any way to test(or at least get a better idea) of where my clunking is coming from..in case my problem is different?Jack up frame of car and then take weight off suspension and look for play?
Did you have any problems with squeeky bushings in the rear suspension by chance?Drove me bloody crazy!I had mine replaced while still under warranty.

I added grease nipples on dogbones and upper control arm, no more squeaks. The bushings I purchased at dealer.Part # MN100250. If at every bump you hear clunk clunk it's the bushings or end-links. I had first changed the end links but the clunk clunk remained so I changed the bushings.

My 2004 Outy at 30,000 miles is starting to make the squeeking noise in the rear you describe. Mine is still under warranty but when I brought it in the techs said they couldn't find anything. Which rear bushings were causing the noise? control arms, sway bars??

I added grease nipples to upper control arm outer bushing and both dogbone bushings, you can see this mod in my garage.

If you can find them buy polyurethane bushings because the OEM don't last.

I've finally experienced the clunk at the bump... Time to to some replacing! Has anyone found any polyurethane bushings yet. I've searched to no avail. It would be nice if some one had some better luck than I have.

You can go for prothane greasable saddle bushings. On the +side no more clunk and squeak on the - side you pick-up a little more road noise. Prothane # 19-1168 front(25mm) and 19-1159 (16mm) for rear. Got mine from never enough auto ( www.neverenoughauto.com ) By adding all these better parts I will eventually get the vehicle I should have had when I first dished out all the cash for it.

Pictured here is the rear one which I just received and will install over the weekend.
Saddle bushings now installed; perfect fit.
I had replaced original with OEM but they don't last. I've since installed the front polyurethane ones. They are a little trickier to install especially the drivers side. But well worth the 20$ no more clunk-clunk for a while.

I'm looking at doing the front ones on my 2003. Did you jack the car and remove the wheels?

Yes, you have to jack both sides otherwise you twist the sway bar. I put mine on 2 jackstands and removed wheels. I've since also replaced both rubber bushings on the end links for polyurethane. Much better ride but slightly stiffer.

Well i did the front end links and the sway bar bushings. I'm still getting a clunk from the front suspension area. It doesn't happen all of the time, then sometimes it seems like every little bump will make the noise. Then it will go away again for a few days. Definitely the front drivers side is where the noise is. The car handles and performs fine. This an AWD 2003.

Okay, maybe you over tighten the end-link bushings. As soon as you see the rubber start to bubble out stop tightening. If you over tighten you lose the damper effect that these rubber bushings are designed for. Did your sway bar have a lot of wear at the bushing? I had to go one size smaller on mine. I installed a 25mm saddle bushing instead.

I think it may be something with the strut spring. Like maybe it got knocked a little and isn't butting up against the top rubber piece properly.

[attachment=11880:Bushing.jpg]Broken or beat-up lower control arm bushing (circled in yellow)will also give you similar clunk-clunk.

Any chance of getting a photo of where this is on the car?

I messed around with the strut spring and the big noises are gone. I still get a little noise when i go over a speed bump, but nothing really with just normal driving.
