My 2001 Galant has a tapping noise coming from the valve cover- I assume it is a valve noise. It happens as soon as I start the engine, and sometimes stays even when the motor is fully warmed up. Occasionally it disappears, but always comes back. My mechanic said not to worry about it if it does not get any worse, but I'm not crazy about that. The car has 60,000 miles on it and I've changed the oil every 3000 miles religiously for the life of the car. Any ideas? Any simple corrective measures? Thanks.

I don't know what causes the problem, but I can tell you this. I've had this exact same issue since about 40,000 miles. The car now has about 130,000 on it, and it still runs like a champ! Crossing my fingers!

try a higher octane fuel and see if the problem goes away, mine did this but mostly on acceleration.

My 2001 galant ES has been making this noise as well for about 75,000 miles and have had no issues. it seems to be intermittant (sp). Doesnt have a patternt for cold or warm or acceleration or stopped. I asked the dealer too and they said they would have to pull the engine apart to definitely tell what the problemj is and im not gonna pay for that when there is no lack in performance.

it is lifter chatter and is generally never a problem.in fact even when changing complete sets of lifters with new the noise can be present or even worse than it was originally.not sure why it happens but keep using a good grade engine flush and oil at every service.

Hi Good afternoon,

I have a 2001 galant VRG it carries a 4g94 DODC straight 4 set up. I bought it from Japan. However, when i first had it there seemed to be nothing wrong, then the engine check light came on, so I took it to the mech. to get a diagnostic.. it said something about the O2 sensor( by the way one of those things cost 3500 barbados dollars= 1700 US) 1/10 of what the car costed in 2005 when i bought it.

Anyway the check light goes off since I got the sensor from trinidad for 400 USD. But the low idling is still a problem and if i leave it unattended it may cut out. A mech told me the intake probably needs cleaning. So sometimes it drives great and then another time it struggles. Oh and when i cold start on mornings there is a knocking but it goes away once the car warms up. Any suggestions? Oh I forgot it is GDI.

best advise if it is gdi is to start by having the throttle body removed and properly cleaned using injection cleaner.gdi engiones are well known for carboning up which can is a sense suffocate your engine at idle causing the low revs and stalling.there are loads of post in the carisma forum regarding this fault.the entire job should take no more than 30min and in most cases sorts this fault out without any further action

My 1999 Galant makes this same noise...tapping that comes and goes ...over and over....talked to my mechanic he says its most likely a valve issue and that its up to me if i wanna replace.....says it may get worse or may stay the same.....i have a lil over 167,000 miles on this car and I'm not looking into dropping way too much money if I need this repaired. Any suggestions or ideas on how much this may cost....thanks

Hi.
Similar noise was in my galant 2003. I change all valve lifters (16 No) and the noise was gone. I check the old lifters, only one lifter was broken. It was good idea to check lifters before and change only the damged one.
However, If somebody can help: few months ago, I tried to start the engine, the battery was gone, and I forced it to start, then the car didn't start. I change the battery with a new one, and from that day the car is pigging at low RPM (up to 3600 TPM approx). it seems like no power, and te problem is bigger when AC is on. I clean EGR valve, reset the PCM, change the fuel filter, add fuel cleaner, and clean the air filter, but still the same problem. Any suggestion before i start to replace all electrical device as per dealer agency request?
Thanks
