Hi everyone. I recently picked up a 96 Diamante 2.5 sohc that seems in good order apart from a couple of things - just wondering if anyone on here has come across these problems before;

1) When i first got the car i realised it had a bit of trouble when cold and would sometimes stall when putting it into gear. It also had a very high idle when warm (1500rpm). I adjusted the idle screw in the throttle to bring the warm idle back down to about 900rpm, and now the car will not idle at all when it's cold, i have to keep giving it gas for a minute or so. It seems the previous owner had adjusted the idle screw out to try and mask the cold idle problem. I spotted a thread somewhere that says to clean the throttle body out, i've done this but it made no difference. Anyone know where i should look next? The idle control valve is on the underside of the throttle body correct? Im thinking i might pull it off and see if i can clean its insides?

2) Now on to the other fault, electric windows. All windows will wind down fine from any switch, but more often than not, *most* windows will only wind up about 2 inches at a time, you just have to keep pulling on the switch again and again till its at the top. I say *most* because the drivers window has actually just stopped doing this and is now operating perfectly lol - Any ideas here?

Any help's much appreciated - Cheers

Gene

It sounds as though your Idle Speed Servo has failed. Normally this is due to a coil in the stepper motor failing. Most commonly they go open circuit.

Here is how you check them.

For the windows try some silicone spray on the felt runners that the glass slides in.

Brilliant! thanks for your help Rob :) Ill check that ISC soon... the windows seem to slowly be fixing themselves, all are working fine now except left rear, but ill give them some silicone anyway

OK, after checking that ISC, it seems that there's no 12v being supplied to it (in pins 2 and 5), anyone know where the relay is for this thing?

I thought the relay is in the ICS itself replace the ISC device

as in rob-D link

REPLACE ISC MOTOR IF ANY RESISTANCE IS NOT 28-33 OHMS AT 20 DEGREES.

uh... read step 2 again, i just checked pins 2 and 5 for voltage, got nothing. The resistances are all fine and in spec. But I imagine if there's no power going to it the ecu wont be able to operate it, this seems to explain how the car idles. If i pop the ISC open and wind it out and reinstall it, the car will idle lower, open it up again and wind it in, the car will idle higher. The ecu doesnt seem to be moving it at all - even though the resistances are all ok.

Any other ideas? 'preciate it :)

OK. I ended up replacing the ISC with a secondhand one, the late model black type. And took the car to mitsubishi to plug in in there and reset the idle speed... sorted! I dont know what the story was with no power to the ISC but its running fine now anyway :)

Cheers for the help guys

I've just bought a 1996 Diamante Espada (2.5 SOHC) (6G73) car. Some days, it feels like its running on 5 cylinders. In fact the colder the day, the worse the problem is. On a 20 degree plus day, the motor runs a lot smoother. I've had the rotor, distributor cap & plugs replaced, HT leads have been checked. The auto electrician also attached his scan device and checked the timing and idle, the results came back as normal. The car ran fine for a couple of days, but its now back at square one.

The reason why I've added to this post is I've got a similar problem with my windows. Whenever the battery is disconnected or the auto electrician uses his scan device to reset ecu errors, the windows play up. The window winds down ok, but will only wind up about 50mm at a time. You need to keep pulling on the switch to wind the window up completely...and its inconsistent. One, some or all the windows will display this behaviour, and if this wasn't already strange, the worse the engine problem gets, the better the windows wind up.

The problem is electrical, just don't know where to start. The check engine light isn't on and the electrician says there are no more error codes to pull. I would have to pay through the nose to keep his scanner attached for a week or so to gather running data. Which at this stage is starting to hurt my pocket.

Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

James

Hey there is no problem with the windows, this is a normal thing after battery disconnection. There is a certain combination of buttons you have to push to reset them (I came across this posting doing a search for it as I can't remember what it is). I know this because of some mitsi mechanic telling me this was necessary. Anyone know the combination? It's something quite random, like turn the lights on, while closing the windows, or some other strange sequence.

Thanks for the heads up "brpullon". I thought I was onto something here. Oh well, back to searching the web and pestering the auto electrician.
