Hey there,

Here is some info I usually look at to compare cars - this is the evo4 (CN9A):

Evo4 Link

Website mentions 10.3L per 100km. This isnt exactly bad but its not good either. I drive the same shape GSR (1800cc) and get a better 8.1L per 100km.

However at reduced power (151kw as opposed to 206kw)

Evo4's are thirsty - probably more than the 1/2/3 series but it all depends on how hard you drive the car. Expect a tank town driving to last 250-350km.

Overall as long as it has been looked after (regular service) they are a pretty solid car.

Cheers

Stix

they arnt to thirsty mine is a 1997 i think it is just the year it was registered in and there is no difference between the 1996 ones. Fuel wise yeah like he said depends on how you drive them, if you drive under boost then it is mint, but if you start boosting everywhere then yeah you can watch the fuel go down. AYC wise i wouldnt know mine was taken out before i got it Ralliart LSD's :D

I just bought an evo 4 before xmas, and I love it!

my AYC was poked before I bought it however but knew how to fix it. (managed to get $3000 off the price HEHEHE!).
and yes they are common to give noise after the 50000km mark if not regularly serviced (the AYC).

The only thing that has 'bugs' is the AYC in the evo4.
The only real main problem is the fact the fluid needs to be changed and bled professionally.

If you hear a grawnching noise (like if you were too low and scraping your tyres) round sharp corners or while zig-zag'ing or jerking the steering wheel left to right this basically means someone who owned it before you let the AYC oil (found in boot) run dry or sit around without a service. The longer this is left the worse it will get (but you can temporarily fix it by hard driving as is pushes alot of the air around so the noise is less)

Its easily fixed by taking it to Mitsubishi (or Ralliart) and get them to change the fluid and bleed the lines, which also involves plugging the AYC computer and testing etc. (thats why you need it done professionally)

This cost me NZ$200 (approx US$142) to fix

The Evo 5 AYC is a little better but if you get an Evo4 and find that the AYC is screwed and you have a bit more spare cash, buy an evo 6 diff & ayc and put that in. (or get an evo 6 rs diff so you dont have one) They are much stronger and dont really have any issues.

Don't stress about the AYC when buying an evo 4 as they seem like (and when screwed sound like) a big problem but arn't really. I'm living proof of that, I managed to get a Mint evo 4 for the price of a GSR!! haha
