Broken Transmission

After pulling out backwards from parking, I couldn't shift to any gear other than the 5th. 1 trough 4 and R are just blocked. I tried the clutch, even drove a few meters in the 5th but nothing gets it to work again. The mechanic says it's inside the transmission box, he suggests replacing it with a second hand unit, which would be a 1200 euro repair. Has anyone seen this problem? Is there an easy solution? Is Mitsubishi to blame?

Thanks, R

Did it not give any signs that it was on the way out before it all stopped?Mechanic prob knows best but a low mileage second hand part would be best if the box cant be reconditioned but 1200 seems alot,is he offering to get it and fit it for you or is that just the costof the new unit?
