My Mitsubishi Pajero Wagon (Montero) (Long version) has a 3.5 l GDI engine and when I got it the engine sounded terrible. It had a very loud knocking/ticking noise from the hydraulic valve lifters, which seems to be a rather common problem on Mitsubishi engines. Especially when the engine is cold.

I have read several threads about this problem, and also some threads about how to fix it. Most of them by replacing or reconditioning the lifters. In Sweden that would cost something like $50-$60 per each lifter. Multiply that by 24 and one realizes that it is not a very funny expense.

So what are the options?

Well, I don't know all of them, but I know one that my wallet liked.
I used an engine cleaner that you mix with the OLD oil, and then let the engine run at idle for ten minutes, getting warm and cozy. Then I replaced the oil and filter, drove the car for a couple of miles and voila, the noise is now gone, even when the engine is cool and at idle.

I know, some of you think that you shouldn't put this kind of crap in the engine, the oil itself has additives that should take care of it. But this is not any crappy STP additive, it's a product that you clean the engine with and than remove it.

I was a bit skeptical to it myself, but it really works.

From now on I will also replace the oil every 5000 km, that should keep the lifters and the rest of the engine in a good condition, reducing the need for another cleaning.

TIA

Please forgive me for not mentioning the name of the cleaner. Silly and clumsy of me to forget.
And very sad that I haven't visited this forum for some time now.

However,
the name of this cleaner is Omega 907 and it is manufactured by Magna Industrial Company LTD,
http://www.magnagroup.com/,
who has representation in over 100 countries all over the world.

Visit their webpage and check where to buy it locally in your country.

Thanks for the advise. Although I run a good oil and am religious about changing at 5k plus all the other recommended maint items mine is also a bit noisey when cold. Think I'll try your trick next oil change and see if it makes a difference. I use to run an oil additive which did help but didn't last more than 2k until the noise started back up.

I got the same problem. I've had my Pajero Exceed only a couple weeks, but after I tried to booster someone's car battery (which now I know is a big NO-NO!!), the sound was there. And I did change the lifters (got my wallet a little less heavy).
Should I try the same method?

I'm confused. How does jump starting someones battery make your lifters noisy and why is this a No-No?
