My 96 eclipse 5 speed has been stalling at random and the speedometer stoped working, Are these two thing related and can any one tell my where my speed sensor is exactly so I can replace it. the engine is a 2.0 non turbo

i dont believe the two are related, but tell us more about the car (what mods, how many miles, smoke out of the exhaust? etc)

the speed sensor is on the rear side of the transmission, right near the firewall-side roll stop mount. in order to see/get to it, you will probably have to remove the battery and battery tray.

The car has 160k on it, The only mods so far is full header back exhaust. The car does smoke out the exhaust when you fist start it, whitch is normaly when it stalls.
You can also smell gas real bad when you first start her up.

what color smoke? and do you have a check engine light?

im haveing a similar problem..but my car will just cut off while im driving i have no idea why only mods on it is a short ram intake..the car has 93k on it..it smokes out of the back wen i start it and wen im at a red light wth do i do

You have to replace the speed sensor. The eclipses when the speed sensor goes i know on manuals when you come to a stop the car doesnt think your moving and stalls out. once you fix that you wont have the problem. the hard part is finding a speed sensor.

the same thing happened to my 95 GS, check your speed sensor, but it might not be bad. Mine had crappy wiring running to it, so we replaced the wiring and it worked fine.

If the smoke coming out of you exhaust is blue in color and happens when you start up or idling your valve guides or valve seals are leaking into the cylinder... and u should probably replace your spark plugs im sure they are fouled from the oil and because they are fouled out, they are not producing enough heat or spark arc creating a rich condition which is why you are smelling gas... pull all your plugs and see if they are black or wet

i may know why it was stalling out on you. the same problem happened to me.

check your intake, because you may have a hole in it that you dont know about.

thats what happened to me a few times. id down shift and would coem to a complete stop and all of a sudden it would lose power completley.

i had my eclipse looked at and there was a humungous hole in the stock pipe. so it was the intake.
