:) hi all
just been the latest edition to the space wagon owners club as have a 1989 (16 years!!) Spacewagon GLX model, petrol, manual, 1800 cc
I have 5 kids so its very useful but i think that she will take a good beating on these British roads
hhmmm- ok it drives nice and is very clean and comfortable inside bit dated but tidy on the outside.very practible. not too bad so far, miss the electric windows but hey, i get power stearing lol.

now bad points so far---loads
1 leak from top of engine area covering all belts, alternator, power steer pump, dizzy, etc etc
2 had to fit all new cv joints and boots- ok so far :)
3 bottom ball joint knocking will have to look at :(
4 but you cant beat it when you jump in one morning to take the kids to school when it just refuses to start- ok so i checked all round and found little if no spark , only to be told it could be the dizzy thats failed!!
looked up the prices to find thast the garage wants £400 for a new one so its now off to the breakers!!
so this is my introduction so far but i can guess at this rate it will be an epic journey but i wont be put of as im always up for a challenge B)

well thats me and if anyone can help please get posting

thanks Paul

Hey there,

I am also a newbie as am in process of buying 1990 Spacewagon 1.8 GLX. The timing belt sqeals when the car starts, but goes off after 30 seconds or so. Shoudl I just replace the belt. Will be just over a fiver in a local shop. I hope it will be good on the British Roads around Derbyshire where I live, and will take me backwards and forwards to Kenilworth from Chesterfield. I am trading in a Pug 205 k reg for this car, as I need 7 seats. Do the back seats fold down completely, or will I have to put stuff on top of the seats?

Anything to watch for in particular.

Take care and thanks

Sounds like your fan belt not the timing belt. Try tightening it up but for a fiver I would replace it if you have just purchased the vehicle :D

The back seats fold down flush with the boot floor but you need to remove the headrests.

the middle row seat backs also fold forward but not flush.

there is also a usefull storage compartment under the boot floor.

An earlyer post advises on things to look out for.

Belt squeal, I found this too, from the belt that drives the power steering pump.
I found I had to get the genuine belt from Mitz. The acesory shop one still squeaked :( .

I also applied some silicone grease to the belt which stopped the noise , reapplied as needed. Only after correctly adjusting of course.
