I've got a tapping coming from the engine of my 1.8 GDI. I've had a look at a few postings dealing with similar issues but there seems a difference of opinion with regards to the tappets.
My engine is the 4g93 engine which definately has hydraulic tappets.
Any one know why they are not adjusting properly, how i could rectify this problem, and if left what would the results be?
The car has had a de-coke just over 12 month ago and i regularly change the oil (3-4 months) and oil filter and use engine flush every time. I currently have 0/30 fully synthetic oil in. Would a change of grade help? Every time i do a change someone recommends a different grade than the previous one.
It definately does it more (or at least is louder and more noticable)when the engine is cold.
All comments appreciated
Thanks

hey, ive got the '99 Carisma sport GDI and i had the same problem, your not suppost to leave the carisma running but i had to do some other maintanance on the car so i left it for about 1 hour and it was still ticking, i knew it was the tappet on the 1st cylinder that was tapping, i switched the car off and left it overnight, when i came to it in the morning the tapping was fainter and i was going to work so i thought if the tappet was going to be replaced i might as well have some fun with it, i gave the car a good drive and when i got to work a friend asked me to rev it, i reved to around 6K rpm and the ticking had stopped as soon as it come to idle again, i checked them myself later and it was fine.

so i'd give leaving it running for a while, let it cool over night, drive hard the next morning and rev it up a go, if not get it checked somehwere else
