My friend owns a Auto shop and they do mostly performance. I could ask him about it but you would have to tell him what exactly you want like bore it out how much, performance pistons and what not. Wont be cheap can tell you that much.

www.howellautomotive.com has a 420A 2.0L short block for $1799.99 w/o core. I'm too lazy to look it up at the moment but it has clevite rods and pistons and other upgrades. I am toying with the idea, but I can get the sum parts necessary to build up the bottom end for about $1500 or so, mostly from www.importperformance.com, performance kit #13 with piston upgrade and oil pump upgrade. I'd get the 9.6 pistons to get more power out of a smaller (slightly cheaper) turbo.

Would the difference in cost of labor (either requires complete removal of the engine, one's just a direct swap vs some parts replacement) be very much or would both replacement and bottom end upgrade cost about the same?

4g63t then? I'd say if you've got the money to upgrade the 420a, sell the car and get a 4g63.
