I am just curious as to if there is a way to turn off the tire monitoring system. I put on a set of 16" rims from my old talon with some new winter tread, and now the display just keeps telling me the tire pressure system has an issue. I know a lot of people are going to be using different rims, so what can I do to fix this.

thanks,

I'd like to know that too. This is kind of dumb to have a warning light AND a huge message taking half of the screen telling me about the same thing. I'm going to stop by at the dealership and will find out.

Hey,

I found if you hold down the info button on the dash you can get rid of the error screen and continue to scroll to engine temp, milage, etc. However, it doesn't fix the tire pressure issue, just gets rid of the screen.

yeah i did figure that out as well, but it is a pain to hit that everytime, and plus I still have the light on, and the ! at the top of the display. someone has to know a way to turn this off. They have to think about how many people are going to put aftermarked rims on.

Yea, same problem here. I'm lookin' for snows since the stock Dunlops on my GTS are horrible in the snow. 2" of icy snow last night and I was spinnin' big time!

Gonna talk to the dealer tomorrow. I want to go with 16" rims and tires, steel rims or cheap alloys.

But gotta find out what to do about the TPS.

ya, i'm wanting to put 16's on mine as well. I'll look into the tire monitoring system. but i was told that putting 16s on the car could damage the TMS. I didn't know if it was BS or not.

All i know is that i'm sliding pretty good on snow, not to bad on ice though

I had this issue, you must take the pressure monitor out of the stock tire, and put it in your aftermarkets, then you may/maynot have to have mitsu reset your comp. mine luckily worked fine. then that annoying notification goes away.

hey thanks for the tip, but could you be more specific when it comes to where the sensor is located etc, i just want to make sure that when I do get aftermarket rims, I can change them and not have that annoying problem, in addition, can any dealer reset your computer or do you have to that yourself too? thanks. :57:

They (pressure monitors) can be removed and put on the aftermarket tire? Regardless of tire size?

okay, i believe its located in the stem of the tire, where the air is pumped. I had a shop do the work for me because you have to take the tires off of the rims.. heres what needs to be done

1. Remove tires from stock rims
2. Remove sensors ( The guy who did mine knew where they were located, but its in the stem)
3. insert senors into aftermarket tires. (tire size no issue, i went from 16's to 18's)
4. put aftermarket tires on new rims.
5. light should go off, because the mitsu comp shud locate them if they were not damaged during extraction. If not they may be damaged or computer must be repgrogramed. They charge about 50 for that here. They told me they would do it all for me for about $120 for extraction and then the $50. my guy did it all for about 60$$

- i hope that helps. that light was pissing me off. But i have aftermarkets and am LIGHT FREE :)

I spoke to the guys in the shop and they said reinstalling the sensors might be NOT a very good idea. I mean are you going to reinstall the sensors every time you change all seasons to winters and back? Thats twice a year. Additional cost, additional possible damage to your rims and additional highly possible damage to the sensors. So why bother? Just to get rid of a stupid light? I got nice alloys (nothing expensive though) for the winter and all I'll be doing now is simply switching the wheels from summer to winter and back. I can live with the stupid light in winter months, no big deal.

Also the Mitsu shop people said it is ILLEGAL for them to shut down the warning system on a vehicle which is equipped with TPMS even though my winter wheels do not have sensors installed. So unless someone comes up with a code or a hack of some sort, I guess I'll be driving with that warning light...

I'm doing the same. Got cheap alloys and 16" Blizzak's without sensors.
The dealer said you could move the sensors from the stock wheels to the aftermarket snows but you risk damaging the sensors. I can live with the warning light for the winter months.

Bad part is the tires and wheels had to be ordered and I'm waiting for them. Hopefully they'll come in today or tomorrow. It's snowing here again today......

k guys, removing the sensors from the factory wheels is no biggie! you dont have to take the tires off the rims either. I am a tech at Acura and just did this on my car. i bought 16" alloys and snow tires.
Pretty much all tire machines these days have an arm that helps mount/dismount low profile tires. the tech can use this arm to push the tire down far enuf to get the tpms sensor off, and replace it with a regular one to re-inflate the tire for storage.
Then re-use the tpms sensor on the aftermarket rims b4 installing the snow tires. nothing has to be done with the ECU because thay are the same sensors. if your new tire size is correct, the circumference is the same as the original.
if you are unsure about what tire size to use www.carmodifier.com has a "tire calculator".

I found this information straight from Mitsu and thought I'd post for the group:

The signals from the TPMS transmitter are received by the KOS-ECU.

KOS-ECU processes input signals from each TPMS transmitter as well as vehicle speed signals from the ABS-ECU. It receives the atmospheric pressure signal from ECM, and when the atmospheric pressure is low (such as at high altitude), it calibrates the tire pressure received from TPMS transmitter and makes a judgment of warning. When the road tire pressure is low, it sends a warning signal causing the TPMS warning light to be illuminated. When the TPMS has problems, it sends a warning signal causing the TPMS warning light to be flashed*.

Standard pressure at cold (reference)
220 kpa (32 psi)

Alarm ON pressure
174 (25.2) or less

Alarm OFF pressure
189 (27.4) or more

Use only genuine wheels. The use of non-genuine wheels may cause the improper installation of the TPMS transmitters, possibly resulting in air leakage and damage to the TPMS transmitter.

Sorry I couldn't get any more. But you may be able to find a way to convince the ECU that your pressure is high in the tires.

Thanks for the advice but I recently took off my stock rims and put new ones and they told me that the mitsubishi sensors don't fit on my new rims therefore my question is do I have to get the same sensors to put on my new rims? or are they universal and if I buy 4 more and put them on, will they communciate with the cars computer and remvoe that annoying tire pressure warning.

Thank you.

I have a set of winter tires with a set of sensors that I got from Tirerack.com. When I bought the winter package I had them add sensors to the new rims and tires. When I took the stock tires off the car and put the winter ones on, I did get the system to trip and tell me that I needed to service the system. I took it to the dealer and they reset it and the car was happy again. It cost me 40 bucks to have the system reset. I had to pay that same fee again once the winter tires came off and I put the factory rims back since our system can only hold the codes for 4 tires and not 8 like some. It sucks but I can't drive with 18 inch tires in New England with the snow we get.

To temporary remove the error, just hold the info button in and it will make the error go away until you shut the car off and turn it back on. That might get you by until you get the new sensors installed.

You can turn off the Maintenance Required reminder by turning the car off, pressing info until you get to the Maintenance page, then holding down the info button until it resets. Although I don't know if this works for "Service Required" reminders... it's still worth a shot.
