'99 Galant Licence Plate Bulb, Only comes on when I open the trunk

He said he pulled me over becuase my licence plate bulb was not working; actually looking for drunk drivers. Anyway, I replaced the bulb and it still does not come on when the headlights are on, it only comes on when I open the trunk. If this is normal, then great, I can tell the next cop to find a better reason for pulling me over...

It sounds like you may either have a wiring or light socket problem. If you're not the original owner, it could be possible the license plate light was tied to the trunk light rather than your running lights. If that isn't the case then maybe there's something wrong with the socket that causes the bulb to make an electrical connection when it's in the open position. At what point does your light turn on (as soon as you open the trunk or when you have the trunk lid in the full open position)?
