new to the forum Hello!

Got a starwagon 4G64 in for a timing belt change. Whats involved and a typical cost in Sydney? Its a bit late now as I had a discussion with the garage about it and have got that sinking feeling like I'm being taken for a ride.

At a guess its the following:
all belts - is there a silent shaft belt seperate?
crankshaft bearing oil seal
sam bearing oil seal
coolant

Anything else?

Perhaps I'm just out of touch with today, your thoughts?
Mike

If you haven't had it done already, there will be a balance shaft belt required as well. Depending on the km's done you shouldn't need to change anything else. However, if it's the DOHC engine, these also have an internal water pump. For peace of mind, you probably should change it, so there will be coolant required. You shouldn't need to change cam seals, main seal unless they are showing signs of leaking. Cam belt idler bearing and tensioners should only need changing second time round. As a precaution though, you might want to change the drive belts (a/c & alternator etc). We have a lot of imports in NZ so the km's on the vehicles can't be relied on to be accurate and having just purchased one and I had all the above done before it left the car yard. However, I've found an oil leak which appears to be originating from behind the timing belt cover which is extremely frustrating for me as the mechanic would have seen it but failed to mention it. A typical cost for what I had done would be approx $400-$500.00NZD parts & labour. Hope this helps

thanks vern, 150,000km on the clock, the timing belt, balancer belt, cam seal, main seal, idler bearing and tensioner bearings, three external belts, coolant all done AUS$570. Annoying thing is one of the external belts slipping on startup - been back once already.

mechanic mentioned, plugs, auto fluid and air filter needed doing too so I've changed the plugs for the iridium type since they are a bit difficult to do (AUS$20 each rather than the normal type AUS$4 each). Never done auto fluid before - the manual indicates 6.8 liters but only 2.5 liters has come out so far - is there a trick to this?

would say the main or cam seal, I think these should always be replaced when doing the timing belt the parts are AUS$10 to AUS$15 each .

with the auto transmission fluid change not sure if this is the best way but followed a cycle of drain/run/fill many times before the transmission became clear red - went through 10 litres of new fluid... I don't think this van has ever had it done it was a brown/black bubbly sludge. this has made a big difference on the road.

how does a mechanic do it, do you use a bypass with a siphon?
