We've only owned the thing for 2 weeks, 140k, looks great, drives ok EXCEPT...

- the brakes. When we bought it I mentioned to the dealership that the brakes weren't right. Way too much pedal force to stop it.
They told me their policy is to replace rotors/pads when - 1) Rotors are at or < min. thk, or 2) pads are < 50%. Neither of those were true (according to them).
However, it takes a TON of pedal force to stop this thing. Compared to the previous '95 LS we had I'd say it's about 2x. I wouldn't be surprised to find out if a caliper's siezed or something like that - I'm not sure what possibilites there are.
Are there any tell-tale signs, or straightforward checks I can do?

The other issue (for now) - the heater.
It was very cold today - granted - but it takes a minimum of 15 minutes for the interior to BEGIN to get comfortable. Again, comparing it to the '95 - in the same amount of time the old truck would have a person sweating.
The '99 isn't even close to where it should be.
Temp gauge looks fine (1/3 up the scale), blower motor moves a ton of air, fresh/recirc. not much diff.
What could be the problem?

Thx for any help.

just to follow up on some solutions I thought someone may be interested in...

Regarding the heater problem - I decided to replace the thermostat.
I discovered a small bolt had been lodged in it preventing it from fully closing.
That explains the problems with the heater not warming up in cold weather.

Another problem I have been dealing with is terrible gas mileage (most recently 12.2, full tank, primarily hwy). I'm hopeful that the open thermostat had been preventing the motor from reaching its appropriate operating temp and negatively effecting the mileage.

I'll post mileage results as they're available.

First mileage check was around 15. Not great, but definitely an improvment.
Plus there was a lot of morning idling waiting for the heater to warm up.

I had the same problem with my brakes on my Pajero Sport '99.

While changing the rear brake pads last weekend I discovered that the brake piston was rusted almost to the bottom. The piston was almost stuck and hardly retracted at all.

I replaced the pistons and things are working better. Next weekend, I'll also look at the front brake pistons...
