Hello - I'm a new owner of a 2003 Eclipse Spyder with bad rear speakers. I went to a local store to get new ones and they said I can't just get speakers I need to replace the entire system. Is this true? Barring no connection for my mp3 player (that I know of anyway) I like what's in it now and don't want to change it. I'm not looking for a monster sound, just loud enough to hear with the top down. Any advice appreciated, thanks!

Um...if you know the back speakers are blown, just replace them. I though it sounded simple.

I thought so too but the place I took it to said if I just replaced the speakers it could blow out the rest of the system. I've only had the car a few weeks, so I really have no clue - that's why I'm looking for help here.

Whoever you brought it too is just trying to sell his product. Get replacements for the ones that are blown. That is all.

well theoretically its possible to blow out your system but for that you need to get badly matched speakers and head unit. in other word if you get speakers that lye with in specification of your old speakers then your ok but lets say your old speakers are 100 W and you get some that are 1200 W, thats a 1100 W difference and if your unit cant handle it well then most likely something bad is going to happen or its just not going to work.. In other words "JUST GET SPEAKERS THAT ARE IN RANGE OF YOUR OLD ONES"

good luck - well at this point you must of done something

Howdy, I've been busy getting my car a new transmission and my wisdom teeth cut out so I haven't really been on in most of the boards lately. The answer to your question is simple. You CAN just replace speakers, the guy at your local audio store just wants to squeeze more money out of you.

It is always recommended however, that you change your head unit as well. A stock head always sounds like crap, no matter what you do to it. If you put in an aftermarket head you will get much better sound quality and will be able to produce at higher volumes.

There are many people who disagree with me, namely phil306 who roams around the car audio section, but I believe that blaupunkt and pioneer are the best bang for your buck. If you are looking for inexpensive, but excellent sound quality and loudness, I would go with either of those.

I will PM some links to you, since you are just looking for a quality starter system, I will keep it in the.... $200 with a head unit, $100 without it.

just make sure the Ohm load of your new speakers match the factory speakers ohm load and you should be fine. sometime swapping out a speaker is not that easy. I did that on a 03 xterra I used to have and I blew the head unit

Crutchfield.com use the what fits my car application, then you can either order from them or search for a better price. And I'm sure theres tons of audio video install places near you. Actually I know there is. And I will rebuild a motor before I ever change the rear speakers in an eclipse again.

If you go sony you will want everything to be sony, for some reason sony products just sound better when used all together.

I had polk speakers and they were great. Right now I'm rockin' out to the Pioneers and can't complain.

100 is the budget? id go with phoenix gold in this situatiuon
and yea sony car audio is just plain sad. if sony wanted to they could build a sub/ speaker/HU that could blow away the rest of the competitors but they choose not to probably for money reasons
