Hello all,

I've got an 07 GS Eclipse that I let the dealer change the oil on for the first two times. I'm going to be changing the oil this time around and have a question. The dealer keeps charging for an oil pan gasket, part #MD050317. Is this legit or another way to nickel and dime me? If needed where do you buy it?

Thanks!

oil pan gasket?sound like they are taking the oil pan out to change the oil.might be precedure for them but no dealer around here does that.you dont need to replace it everytime you change your oil unless its leaking from there.you can buy one from the autoparts of they carry one if not then the dealer but you dont need to just unplug the pan and let it drain.

is it the oil pan gasket or the oil drain plug gasket? if its the oil drain plug gasket i have heard different people say different things. some say that you should change it every time you change your oil. others have said that you dont have to change it unless its worn or crushed. i personally dont change them unless i have oil leaking out of the drain plug.

i've got a question,

i just recently found out about this whole Oil Pan Gasket, and i THINK that may be the reason for all the leakage in my 97 eclipse rs. but, some dealers told me that the leaking is coming from my main seal, or my headgasket.
What happens if the head gasket or main seal is constantly leaking? If there are major consequences, then my oil pan gasket may be the cause, not the other things that they have told me...because nothing has really happened to my car yet, and it's been a while that it has been leaking.

thanks.

if the head gasket is leaking that is a big issue and has the potential to be disastrous if not taken care of. if the main seal is leaking and you get oil on your timing belt it can ruin it which if it breaks will also be disastrous. if its your oil pan or oil plug gasket that is leaking then you have an oil leak that you just have to watch to make sure you dont get to low on oil. it should be fixed but if you cant then you just watch your oil loss.

It depends who you ask. I change them out only when they need to be changed. My 01 has 117K on it which is quite a few oil changes and I can only remember changing it once or twice. Other mechanics will tell you that it needs to be changed every time. For the dealership, it could just be a nickel and dime thing. When I change them at work, we usually just charge .25 or .50 depending on the type of gasket. You can buy them in bulk if need be. I personally would not worry too much about it unless you actually get drips/leaks from it.
