Howdy, all...
I read that:
"The 4D55 is nearly identical to the 2.6L gas engine found in small Mitsu and Dodge pickups (and Mazda B2600 pickups, and Starions and Conquests). They are a DIRECT bolt in, the only thing you have to change is extend the wiring for the alternator and take the in tank fuel pump out if you have one."
I have seen many of these swaps online, but only into standard trans/rear wheel drive trucks, Ford Ranger 4D55's into Monteros seems to be popular.
Does anybody know if the 4D55 or 4D56 diesel can be swapped into a front wheel drive/auto transaxle vehicle like my '86 Caravan? Mainly, are the bellhousing / bolt patterns the same on all three?
Does anyone have an engine or parts manual on these, showing the motor mounts or dimensions on the complete engine or engine block?
The rest I can deal with...electrical, fuel tank/fuel line/fuel pump issues, linkage, and I expect to have to beef up the front suspension to handle the extra weight. I also know that the transmission shift is cable-controlled, directly from the throttle cable...so no problem there. I also expect to have to put a belt-driven vacuum pump on it for the power brakes....
BTW, if anybody is interested, there's a YouTube where a guy swapped a Jetta Diesel into his Caravan, transmission and all. He had to fabricate some motor mounts and cut and weld his front axles...the transmission end of the axles are VW, but the wheel ends are Dodge. Very cool.
Thanks in advance...
