hi,, sounds like a problem with the throttle body, this is a fly by wire device, IE: no throttle cable. apparently the servo that drives the air inlet butterfly can develope wear and become out of sync with the positioning sensor. and this will cause erratic tickover , poor emmisions etc. this will bring the engine managment light on and generate a error code . . yes it is difficult to find someone with a pc and softwere to check the electronics. the throttle body need removing and sending to desent repair /refurbish specialist, the cost £250 tops. you will need to supply all the info about the car engine type chassie numbers etc. on its return you should have some set up paper work , this entails takeing the car on a 30 min drive for it to relearn all the settings. give scrap yards a miss as you need to fit a body with the same numbers as the original, and you dont get the set up instructions ,and it might be part worn. remove the two electrical connectors . four bolts hold the body to the inlet manifold. remove the two water pipes that heat the body ..held by j clips and plug with the bolts.
i trust this helps .. if you are brave remove and clean the carbon build up in the inlet manifold. ( very little in mine after 54,000 miles ). the above fix transformed my car. no problems over the last 2000 miles. but i am touching wood and finger crossed... good luck .. the joys of motoring. ps. the gdi does like a good hot run now and then with plenty of revs... clears the lungs.
